According to me …

Athletes are men and women of sport; sportspeople if you will. We are contestants, participators, competitors, players. Everyone has the capacity or ability be an athlete. However, in saying this not for everyone. Athletes by my definition are serious in the pursuit of greatness at their specific sport. What unifies and defines us as athletes is the goal of bettering ourselves and our performance.

Athletes come in many shapes and sizes. From a gigantic offensive lineman and freakish strong men to lean track runners and tiny yet powerful gymnasts. Athletes come in so many molds, from the boisterous football player to the quiet and reserved power lifter.

What separates athletes from the general gym users is that, athletes are willing to do whatever it takes whether that’s running through a 240 pound linebacker or landing a perfect double back-flip during their floor routine. Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes whether that’s waking up at 4:30am and walking thru the sleet and snow to train or sweating our way through sprints in the 90-degree weather.

Athletes don’t care about the consequences, as a football player we know the risks associated with the sport yet we still participate, prostituting our bodies for crowds and our enjoyment. Every sport whether it be gymnastics or strong man has risk. Yet as athletes we completely disregard these because of our love of the game or competition.

A lot of us dedicate our lives to the endless pursuit of perfection whatever that may be for our individual sport. You have to be a special kind of person to be an athlete, we know that we are never going to play perfect but we are always chasing that. Antonio Brown the Best receiver in the NFL, quite often states that he needs to get better. That’s a trait that all great athletes possess Kobe Bryant never rested even though for several years he was the best player in NBA he never rested or stopped trying to get better. What unifies and defines us as athletes is our relentless pursuit of perfection.
An athlete will not quit or give up unless they are forced to. Athletes will work tirelessly until what needs to be accomplished is. This what defines us. What unites us. Our tireless pursuit of perfection whatever that may be.
