important information for families from Australian Federal Police

The Australian Federal Police through theAustralian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation https://www.accce.gov.au/ is seeing a concerning global trend of teenagers being targeted to send explicit images of themselves and then blackmailed. This is called sexual extortion, or sextortion.

The AFP is urging families to have important safety conversations ahead of the school holidays to prevent young people from becoming victim. This crime can have serious wellbeing and psychological impacts.

How does sextortion start?

· Unsolicited friend and follow requests on social media

· Direct messages on one app and then being asked to keep chatting on a secondary app

· Conversations suddenly and quickly becoming sexualised

· Requests for sexualised images or content.

What can families do?

· Have open and regular conversations about your child’s online activities and interactions

· Know what platforms, apps and games they are using and who they are interacting with

· Remain open and approachable, victims will be reluctant to come forward if they feel they will be punished or blamed

· Ensure your child knows that it is okay to leave conversations if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe · Support your child and know how to respond. The Online blackmail and sexual extortion response kit click here has been created to recognise sextortion and get help.

The Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation is here to keep young people safe from online sexual exploitation and abuse.

Volleyball NSW School Cup 2022

On the 21st November 2022, eight students in Year 10 went to Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park to compete at the Volleyball NSW School Cup. These talented students competed in the Year 11 Girls Division and played valiantly throughout the day. Competing against schools including Seven Hills High School and Caringbah High School, our team managed to win a set in each game. After main rounds, our team qualified into the quarterfinals and were up against a strong side in Rose Bay Secondary College. It was a very close game with Hornsby Girls winning the first set. Unfortunately, we fell short by three points in the final set. I want to congratulate these students for their sportsmanship and continuous optimism as they all look forward to next year’s tournament.

2022 SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR

On Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th of November, several senior choir students took part in Schools Spectacular at Qudos Bank Arena as part of the two-thousand-two-hundred-voice choir. Over the course of four day-long rehearsals and four shows, we had the privilege of seeing the amazing talent showcased by the dancers, featured artists and other singers as well as being able to meet people from a variety of schools all over NSW. We had lots of fun learning choralography and signing for the performances and navigating the many colourful props we received before the shows. We even had time to explore SpecFest where there was lots of delicious food, many talented performers and many opportunities to get freebies from the show’s sponsors. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience that we learned a lot from. Thank you to Mrs Sutcliffe and Ms McCarthy for supporting us during this experience.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE

On Wednesday 30th November six year 9 students from Social Justice attended the Model United Nations conference. Two teams of three students (Saamiya, Ishi and Anousheh) and (Evie, Helen and Maya) represented the countries Finland and China respectively. With teams from other schools representing other countries, we debated resolutions on Globalisation, Climate Change and Global Unity. We all had an amazing experience where we debated on what resolutions we as a nation favoured or were against and were able to collaborate and cooperate with other countries to form resolutions to conflicts. Using our perspective of our assigned country, we were able to amend decisions to cater for the needs of other countries and appreciate differing viewpoints. This platform gave us the chance to experience the challenges of negotiating, and the rewards of cooperation and generally broaden our understanding of international relations. Furthermore, we were able to make good friendships with the many other schools that participated as we heard their viewpoints. The experience was extremely enjoyable, and we all felt like the day flew by as we voted on the resolutions proposed! We can't wait for next year when we get the chance to participate in this great learning experience again. A huge thanks to Ms Guan who supported us throughout the day.

Saamiya Abbas - Year 9

I would just like to pass on my thank you and commendation, for the attendance of your students at the Asquith Girls High School Model United Nations on Wednesday. Their conduct was impeccable, and they were highly engaged in debating world issues. They were a credit to your teachers and school and a pleasure to have at our school - Jaye Dunn, Rel Head Teacher HSIE Asquith Girls High School

2022 WSHK Walk the Talk

Ten of our students from Years 8 and 9 attended the Women’s Shed Hornsby Ku-ring-gai ‘Say NO to Family & Domestic Violence’ Walk the Talk on Wednesday, 30th of November.

The students joined the public and members of WSHK on a walk from PCYC Waitara around the streets of Hornsby and back, holding banners and signs to promote awareness of domestic violence and to acknowledge those who have lost their lives due to it.

After the walk, we got to listen to many different spokespeople about their views and experiences with domestic violence, including those from PCYC Waitara, IABBV Hindi School, the Ku-ring-gai Neighbourhood Centre, SAHELI, and the Community Migrant Resource Centre. They all highlighted the necessity for ongoing domestic violence to be reported if witnessed, regardless of who you are or your age.

This event occurs annually so you are encouraged to join next year!

Year 9 Peer Support Training

The Year 9 cohort received two days of training to equip them in running the Peer Support program for the 2023 Year 7 cohort. Students learnt about managing group dynamics, making everyone feel welcome and included, effective communication and listening, and how to be a good mentor and friend.

All of Year 9 approached the training maturely and we were so incredibly proud of the insight offered in the group discussions. 36 Student Wellbeing Leaders were selected to run the Peer Support program and deliver SWLbeing during assembly time next year.

Congratulations to the following students, who have already completed their first job in the role by leading the school tours at Orientation Day this week.

Duke of Edinburgh - Adventurous Journey

During the Term 3 holidays (28 Sep - 30 Sep), a group of 12 students completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey at Upper Colo River, near the Blue Mountains. This consisted of 3 days of continuous hiking while carrying a rucksack of 12-13kg. Although it was incredibly tiring, it was an enjoyable experience for sure! We encountered some of the best views we had ever seen and sensed the satisfaction of reaching the summit of a mountain. Moreover, we also had to direct ourselves through the hike using a map and learned practical skills such as how to set up a tent.

This was all part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award program, the world’s largest Youth Development program, which helps young people to develop leadership skills through the pursuit of personal best achievement in a skill, through community service, physical recreation and the adventurous journey. Despite the challenging weather we experienced, it was an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable experience!!

The Duke of Edinburgh program is open to all students aged 14 and over from Year 9 onwards, if you’re interested in joining to Award, talk to current award participants, your parents, check out the website and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader Mr Moss in the HSIE faculty.

The Importance of Girls' SCHOOLS

This week the media in Australia reported on comments made by NSW Labor leader Christopher Minns suggesting he would add more co-educational state options in certain areas should Labor be elected in the next election.

Loren Bridge, Alliance Executive Officer, joined a radio interview panel to discuss the ever popular topic of single-sex versus co-educational schooling, putting forward the case for the many benefits of girls' schools.

We are committed to working with parents, guardians and schools to provide safe, reliable and efficient bus services.
