It has been another busy term and before we knew it Spring had sprung!

Our Year 8 pupils have made us proud with their Scholarship successes.

Dan was awarded a Music Scholarship to Lincoln Minster…

Beth achieved an All-rounder Scholarship to Lincoln Minster…

Henry, Freddie and Thom were awarded Scholarships to Oakham...

Ruby achieved her Scholarship to Oundle...

... with everyone joining together to celebrate their achievements with Penny who was awarded her Sports Scholarship to Sedbergh last term.

Events

We celebrated special dates in the calendar...

Chinese New Year

Nursery welcomed in the Chinese New Year...

...they painted Chinese numerals using their own homemade paint in the woods!

The whole school celebrated Shrove Tuesday with pancake making and races!

World Book Day was, as always, a whole school affair...

...with pupils (and staff) never failing to impress us with their fantastic outfits and book choices!

Trips and Excursions

Fingers were poised ready as eight of our Year 6 pupils travelled to Uppingham for the On the Buzzer general knowledge quiz competition.

Year 7 travelled to the National Civil War Centre in Newark to support their learning about the British Civil War.

Their enactment of the trial of King Charles I proved much fun with Rico as the doomed monarch, Huxley as the ‘mysterious woman’ and Sam as the executioner!

While Year 3 took a trip into the village to take on a shopping challenge to learn all about money!

Year 2 enjoyed a trip to Tattershall Castle to find out more about castles as part of their History topic.

They created some fabulous artwork to demonstrate the different features of a castle.

Visitors

We always love to invite people into school and this term we have had the pleasure of hosting a variety of guests and visitors…

Uppingham School’s Head of History, Mr Patterson delivered a History Mystery talk to our Year 5-8 pupils - encouraging them to think about how they can critically use evidence to uncover the past.

Year 5 pupils and Latin students in Years 6-8 were lucky enough to take part in a Classics Lecture delivered by Sam Dewhurst of Uppingham School and thoroughly enjoyed finding out what life was like for a wealthy Roman.

Our Nursery and Pre Prep pupils enjoyed a day of interactive story telling, all perfectly linked to their class topics, thanks to a visit from the wonderful touring theatre company, Rhubarb Theatre.

Pupils in Years 6-8 got creative after a visit from local author, Kerry Drewery.

Kerry's latest novel, The Last Paper Crane, inspired them to discover the Japanese art form of origami to create paper cranes which they decorated with their own haiku poems.

School had a real buzz as we welcomed schools and parents to our Future Schools Evening.

We must not forget to thank a special visitor who came to stay with Chestnut Class....

Rex the bearded dragon made some lifelong friends whilst helping the class in their lessons this term. He particularly enjoyed helping pupils with their measuring challenge!

Topic Fancy Dress!

Our Pre Prep pupils always love to bring their topic work to life so there is always the perfect excuse to come to school in fancy dress!

Year 1 turned into Scientists for the day and enjoyed a fun-filled day of wonderful experiments.

Year 2 got creative in their choices of outfit which were all perfectly linked to their topic: Castles, Dragons, Quests and Adventures.

Chestnut Class had a roar-some day as Palaeontologists. They uncovered fossils, hunted for eggs and even got to meet some dinosaurs!

Health and Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing is always an integral part of school life.

This term we were delighted to host our first Wellbeing Forum, welcoming professionals from a range of local schools.

We have enjoyed some lovely, and sunny, lunchtime Wellbeing Walks...

...with a very welcome addition to the pack, Mr Wyld's dog, Maisie!

The whole school joined together to celebrate Mental Health Week and we encouraged everyone to 'Grow Your Own Way'!

Music

In addition to a busy term of music lessons and weekly visits from our Peri music team, we have also enjoyed a number of events.

We joined more than 200 pupils at Uppingham Prep School’s Orchestral Day for a ‘We are the Champions’ musical event.

Our Junior Music Concert featured every member of the school from Year 2 to Year 6 and was the perfect culmination to showcase everyone’s hard work and dedication throughout the term.

Drama

Shrek The Musical was an outstanding show performed by our Prep pupils and staff.

The fantastic stage, scenery, costumes and individual performances highlighted the labour of love it has been!

To everyone involved in the show - you were simply brilliant!

Your peers, teachers, family and friends all loved it!

Sport

We’ve seen a lot of action on the astro pitch, fields and courts as well as in the pool – with an almost countless number of fixtures and events.

Our U13 Girls did us proud coming Runners Up in the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Indoor Cricket Competition!

Conditions at some of the Cross Country events were less than favourable!

At the Copthill Cross Country the St Hugh's team rose to the challenge and embraced the rain, mud and hills!

Superb team efforts earned the U9 Boys 1st place and the U11 Girls 2nd place!

Florence finished in an impressive second place.

At Worksop Cross Country, there were strong performances from our runners once again. Our U11 Girls’ team were crowned champions and our boys achieved 2nd place in their category.

A number of our runners also took home plaques for placing in the top five.

Our trip to Ayscoughfee Hall School’s Invitational Cross Country was a fantastic finale to the season with forty of our runners taking part.

On what ended up another very wet day, the overall team results highlight our excellent performance despite the weather:

  • U11 Girls - 1st
  • U11 Boys - 3rd
  • U9 Girls - 3rd
  • U9 Boys - 2nd

On the football pitch, we have enjoyed both home and away fixtures.

Our U13s competed in the IAPS Qualifiers hosted at Culford.

On the Netball courts we performed well in fixtures and welcomed other schools to our U9, U11 and U13 Netball Festivals.

The U11A team had a fantastic end to the season at S. Anselm’s Netball Festival. The girls didn’t lose a match and were joint winners – sadly only missing out on the trophy due to goal difference.

We congratulated Angelina, Florence and Sophie who attended a Lincolnshire County Academy Netball trial and successfully secured a place on the Lincolnshire U11 Programme!

It's been an enjoyable Rugby 7s season.

Our U13 Boys competed in the IAPS Small Schools' 7s Tournament at Sherborne, and the County 7s Tournament.

The girls now eagerly await their trip to London for the finals in June!

Years 3-6 all joined together for our Intra-School Swimming Gala with pupils representing their Sets.

We congratulated the winners of the individual medley events.

Forest School

In Forest School everyone has enjoyed the changing season as we celebrated Wassail, Burns Night, Valentine’s Day and Easter.

Everyone has continued to add to their culinary skills…

…this term our pupils have added haggis, pheasant nuggets, pancakes and sticky weed pesto to their repertoire!

We monitored the birds in our woods by joining in on the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch and made our own bird feeders.

We got creative and made Valentine’s gifts, compasses and clay nests.

We learnt new skills building pallet houses and tyre composters.

We celebrated Easter by hunting for frozen nature eggs that had been carefully hidden!

But most of all we enjoyed being outside together come rain or shine – even after all the windy weather!

Boarding House

Our Boarding House has continued to be a hive of activity with lots of social events.

With a change of routine being introduced, our Boarders have been able to relax more and spend time together – talking, playing, taking the dog for a walk or watching a film.

Our Boarders also welcomed Year 4 and Year 5 pupils on their Taster Evenings.

Everyone still loves a special visit to McDonalds for a treat!

Thinking of Ukraine

Like the rest of the world, we could not help but be moved and saddened by the news of Ukraine.

As a school, we decided to set up a collection point with fantastic organisation thanks to Mrs Costello, our Eco Warriors group and Year 8 pupils.

Joining forces with Woodhall Spa Lions Club, we continue to be overwhelmed by the generous donations and support from our families and the local community.

Thank you!

Sets

It has been brilliant to finally reunite the members of our Red, White and Blue Sets.

Each team met to decide on their chosen charities.

After much deliberation, the following charities were agreed on:

  • Red: World Wildlife Fund.
  • White: Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
  • Blue: JDRF diabetes charity.

The Set Cross Country marked the end of the first half of the term, with some excellent performances from runners across each Set.

Everyone displayed resilience and teamwork with White Set being crowned the winners!

Our Sweat For Your Set event was the perfect way to finish the term.

Members of each of our Sets welcomed their family and friends to join in the fun to raise money for their chosen charities.

There were lots of surprises along the way!

We are now eagerly waiting to see how much each Set managed to raise for their chosen charity...

Thank you to everyone for coming to support the event!

More photos and the amounts raised to follow...

Easter Egg Hunt

On the last day of term, there was even time for Our Nursery and Pre Prep children to go on a Easter Egg Hunt.

Thank you to our Parents' Association for the chocolate eggs!

To all our families, have a lovely Easter break!

We hope the Spring sunshine soon returns!
