Beehive

The Bumblebees have continued to read the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. They have been amazing at joining in with re-telling the story, using lots of nouns, verbs and repeating refrains. We have also looked at concepts of 'on and under' and 'big, middle/medium and little'. This week, we have started the story of 'Silly Dizzy Dinosaur'. The Bumblebees will explore lots of different dinosaurs, what they ate and will also continue to look at the concept of size.

F1

In F1 this week we have been looking at space and the planet we live on. The children created some lovely collage pictures of earth. They have really enjoyed learning about the earth and the surrounding planets. They have loved the story of 'The Enormous Egg' and we are looking forward to taking photos of the children telling the story next week.

Ask your children about the dinosaurs they have been learning about, they may surprise you with their knowledge!

F2

Foundation 2 have had a super time learning all about dinosaurs. We have also been artists and designers, creating our own dinosaur models and even a volcano. We have also been musicians this week and enjoyed learning lots of new songs and rhymes about dinosaurs, including 5 Little Dinosaurs, Who has the Stegosaurus and we really enjoyed listening to an orchestra playing music by John Williams. His music was in a dinosaur film called Jurassic Park. We enjoyed moving in different ways to the sounds of the music.

We have also been finding out about composition of number in our maths work and been innovating our stories in Talk 4 Writing.

Next week we are looking forward to finding out about the traditions of Chinese New Year.

The children have really enjoyed making a dinosaur swamp outside using the sand and water. However, we have used up nearly all of our spare clothing when children have got wet. Please wash and return any spare clothes that you child has borrowed and if you have anything that you could donate to school (particularly trousers, socks and pants) we would really appreciate it. Thank you

Year 1

Year 1 have been very busy with our learning this past week. We really enjoyed getting outside to explore the habitats of different wildlife around our school. In art we have continued to look at the work of Keith Haring. We practised drawing human figures and using a grid to help us scale up a drawing. We have also enjoyed looking at toys from the past and present in history and how people of the Jewish religion, worship at a synagogue.

Year 2

This week in maths the children have continued their learning of money: specifically looking at the concept of change in a role-play restaurant.

The children have loved designing their own human figure in Art, inspired by the artist Keith Haring. Up-scaling was another importance artistic concept for the children to practise, making a drawn design larger using the grid method.

Exploration of Jewish artefacts was a particular highlight of this week, where children handled very important and delicate items including the Jewish holy book: The Torah, and a Mezuzah which is hung on the front door of a Jewish household and is to be touched when entering. The children loved this experience.

Next week, the children will be putting all their new ideas and learning into their amber write 'Defeat the Monster' plan and story during Talk for Writing. We are beginning the brand-new topic of Place Value in maths, specifically identifying and representing numbers. The children are also looking forward to National Story Telling Week next week, where we are reading our five nominated children’s books and then each child will vote for their favourite. Their votes will contribute towards the James Reckitt Children’s Picture Book Awards 2022.

Year 3 and Year 4

This week Year 3 and 4 have been creating questions to ask our friends at Adelaide Primary School all about life as a Muslim child in Hull. We look forward to asking these next Tuesday.

The children have also really enjoyed our T4R unit based around the text 'Varjak Paw' and are sad that unit will soon be ending.

In History we had lots of fun creating Roman shields and then enacting a battle scene on the playground.

The children have all tried hard in our termly tests and in maths they have thoroughly enjoyed learning about geometry.

Join us to celebrate National Story Telling Week 30th January - 6th February 2022 at Wold. We would love our children to parade their story telling talents, whether this be story telling through reading or creating their own stories.

Take pictures of your children reading or writing in extraordinary places or being a story-teller to a friend or family member and send on to your child’s teacher to share with their class.

Please encourage children to bring in their story books or creations to share with their class members too.

We would also like adult volunteers for a SECRET MISSION. We know our children love including you in their school life, so we would like to invite you to be a VIP storyteller in your child’s classroom, during National Story Telling Week.

If you would like to read to your child’s class, please contact your child’s teacher, with a book in mind, via dojo or in person to arrange a date and time. Due to other learning in school, we can only offer limited spots, so be sure to sign up quickly. Please help us keep our VIP visits as a special surprise for the children.

Year 5

This week we have learnt how to draw scientific electric circuits, about hobbies in Spanish, ecotourism and the impacts of the Artic. We have also continued with our singing and started our Hansel and Gretel project.

Next week, we are learning about Alfred the Great, switches and famous scientists and continuing with our Geometry unit in maths.

Year 6

Fully settled back into school life, the children in Year 6 are enjoying a rich and varied curriculum. Our new history topic on World War II has captured the children's imagination including: the causes of the war, Hitler's rise to power and the role propaganda played in the road to war. We would love to hear from you if you have any historical sources from the time such as diaries, medals, or photographs from World War II. Perhaps some of you have elderly relatives who remember the war who our children could interview in small groups - this would be very enriching.

This week, in science, the children made a model of the lifecycle of an insect and in groups created a short film about this. As you can imagine, the classroom was buzzing with creativity and the children loved applying their knowledge in this way.

In maths, we have been studying percentages, which proved to be a challenge, but we are delighted to say that the children have made huge strides with this difficult concept and are beginning to conquer percentage word problems.

Finally, we are starting a new text called 'Rooftoppers' in English. It is certainly a 'page turner' which is full of intrigue and characters who draw you in, encouraging the reader to think about the world from a different perspective.

As always, many thanks for your continued support and we hope your child enjoys sharing all of this with you.

Tuesday 8th February will be Safer Internet Day, which raises awareness of online safety around the world. We are forever progressing into a more technological future and while this makes life easier for many, there are always dangers to be wary of and we need to ensure we have the most up to date methods of protecting ourselves. Here are some top tips for staying safe online.

  • Never share personal information over the internet - especially with people you do not know in real life.
  • Never open any suspicious looking emails or attachments, they could contain viruses that would infect your computer.
  • When online, treat others as you would expect to be treated. The idea that we are anonymous online can sometimes lead people to think they can be unkind to others and not get found out (almost never the case).
  • Be sure to only look at age-appropriate material; games, films etc. have ratings for a reason. If you're not old enough to buy it, you shouldn't be playing it. Before downloading an app, ensure that it is age-appropriate and that if it contains adverts, they are also appropriate.
  • When using online chat (either through phone apps or through games on PC and console), only chat to people you know in real life. If somebody begins to be mean or say/ask things you aren't comfortable with, tell a grown up immediately.
  • If a game requires money to play, you must get permission from your parents before any microtransaction is completed. Card details do not have to be kept online permanently and while these feel like a handy, time saving feature, it has led to some very large bills.

Online safety and security is everybody's responsibility and by working together we can help protect ourselves and make being online a safe, enjoyable experience for all.

If you have any questions about e-safety, please don't hesitate to contact us and you can speak to Mr Haymes.
