Meet our Newest CTE Faculty Member: Christopher Johnson

A special, "Tiger" welcome to Hattiesburg High School's newest CTE instructor, Mr. Christopher Johnson. He currently lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and teaches both Digital Media Technology I & II. He received his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees from William Carey University in Interscholastic Athletic Administration. In addition, he completed his Specialist Degree in Education Technology from Walden University. He enjoys working with students and serving as their leader and mentor. Mr. Johnson said that "Being around many different people, affords me the opportunity to meet students from all walks of life. This has taught me the importance of getting to know students and having compassion for them. My goal is to continue to work with students and learn how to incorporate new technological platforms within education."

HHS Health Science Instructor, Mimi Wilson, received the WDAM "Golden Apple Award"

WDAM's Golden Apple Award was given to Mrs. Mimi Wilson for the month of August. Mrs. Wilson returned to her Alma Mater after serving as an instructor in the US Army. While in the Army, she taught Blood Donor Center Operations and an Apheresis Course. When Mrs. Wilson was asked about how this experience prepared her for teaching at Hattiesburg High, she responded: "In order to demonstrate competence, I had to teach classes to my commanding officer and NCO before we could teach servicemen. I still, to some degree, set that standard for my teaching." After the army, she earned a nursing degree from Pearl River Community College through the ADN program. She worked as a nurse for fifteen years before becoming a Hattiesburg High School's CTE instructor. Mrs. Wilson believes that students must show empathy as well as demonstrate an ability to pay attention to details while critically thinking and communicating well with others. She also feels "great honor" to lead her students as they pursue careers in health science. Mrs. Wilson's students shared that, "She never leaves anyone behind". Their words are a testament to her character and work ethic. By Jennie Noonkester and Brandi Kopszywa

Hattiesburg Public School District's CTE Director was honored by the Hattiesburg School District as their "Alumni Spotlight." AAA Ambulance Rolls-In

Law and Public Safety and Sports Medicine students listened as local AAA EMTs and Paramedics talk about their profession. Students toured inside the ambulance, touched equipment, and saw how several rescue devices. Usually, the classes get to visit the AAA Ambulance and Dispatch facilities; but, due to COVID-19 safety precautions, AAA took the show on the road. Thank you for your support of our CTE programs. The Forrest County Coroner Visits Law and Public Safety and Health Science Classes

A special "thank you" to Forrest County Coroner, Butch Benedict, for visiting our Law and Public Safety and Health Science students. Mr. Benedict believes that "You cannot approach a case with tunnel vision. You always have to be aware of what is around you." Mr. Benedict noted that this allows corners to note all possible reasons for a person's passing. Furthermore, he feels that a coroner must have patience and the ability to empathize with people because they are confronting individuals as they receive traumatic information about their loved ones. Culinary Arts Students Demonstrate Safety Skills

Culinary Arts II students began this year's lab work by demonstrating their knowledge of ServSafe food safety skills. In the lab, students practiced reading a recipe, following the process, doing mise en place (culinary term in which students have to prep the day before the lab), and cleaning their workspace. The students did a great job creating cinnamon bread. Caption by Jennie Noonkester and photos by Toni Floyd

Because of COVID-19, many CTE Health Science programs across the US struggled to find ways to complete their clinical hours due to the spread of this disease. Cyber Foundations II: N.r. Burger

It's a GREAT day to be a TIGER! Cyber Foundations II is a new seventh-grade course at N.R. Burger Middle School. During the second week of October, students introduced themselves with their "All About Me" Google Slides. Before presenting their information, students ha to take different "self-assessments". These assessments fall under Unit 3 ("21st Century Toolbox"). In this Unit, students learned about the different learning styles and personality traits found within the classroom and workplace.
