STUDENT ONLINE ORIENTATION Semester 1, 2023

Congratulations on enrolling with TAFE Queensland, the largest and most trusted training provider in the state. Whether you're studying for the first time or returning to study to enhance or change careers, a qualification from TAFE Queensland is a step on your pathway to greatness.

If you’re brand new to TAFE Queensland or even if you are a returning student, you probably have a few questions. The information within this orientation is designed to provide you with all the essential information you'll need to know during your first few weeks.

Studying is a big commitment so check out the video below to hear some of our teachers and staff share their tips for successful study.

A course induction will be conducted on the first day of your course.

GETTING STARTED

STUDENT RULES AND POLICIES

As a TAFE Queensland student you'll need to familiarise yourself with the student rules and policies, these outline your rights and responsibilities as a student. The full student rules and policies cover a range of areas including:

  • Personal conduct and behaviour including equity and diversity, use of facilities and resources, and health and safety
  • Enrolment and fees including student support, fees, and refunds
  • Assessment, progression and misconduct including articulation, extensions, and appeals
  • Results and awards including grades
  • Complaints and feedback
  • Further information for international students.

STUDENT PORTAL

With the Student Portal, you're in control. The portal is your one-stop-shop for easy access to the information you need about your study with TAFE Queensland.

STUDENT ID CARDS

Your TAFE Queensland Student ID card is your passport to student life. You’ll need it to borrow books from the library and gain access to certain facilities. It’s also your VIP pass to discounted travel, movie tickets, meals, and more. It’s important to keep your ID card with you at all times when on a TAFE Queensland campus.

You may have received your ID card when you enrolled, if not you'll need to visit your nearest campus to have your ID photo taken. If you can't make it to one of our campuses simply send a photo of yourself to info.north@tafeqld.edu.au and we can send your ID card to you or your campus for collection.

DIGITAL ACCESS

As a TAFE Queensland student, you’ll be able to access our computer network and a range of digital services including WiFi, Connect, Studiosity, and more.

To access these services you first need to create a password by following these steps:

  1. To create a password use the Access Password Manager
  2. Enter your user name (your 9 digit Student Number)
  3. Follow the prompts

Your password will remain valid for 60 days. Automatic reminders will prompt you to change your password as required.

WI-FI

Free Wi-Fi is available at most of our campuses*. You can use the Wi-Fi to access your course materials, online services, and more. By using the Wi-Fi you are agreeing to the student rules and policies.

Setting up your Wi-Fi connection will depend on your device. To find out how to connect your device click the below link and follow the instructions.

*excludes Atherton, Bowen, Charters Towers, Cloncurry, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba, Normanton, and Palm Island.

CONNECT

Connect is TAFE Queensland's online Learning Management System (LMS). It has everything you need in one handy location, giving you the flexibility to study anywhere, anytime. In Connect you can access your study resources, submit assessments and communicate with teachers and classmates.

You can access Connect online at connect.tafeqld.edu.au. Simply log in with your username (Student ID) and network password. You will need to use Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox browsers to access Connect.

You can also access Connect using the Brightspace Pulse App. With Brightspace Pulse you can access communications, content and grade results in Connect. To download, follow the instructions below.

SUPPORT SERVICES

We offer a range of student support services to help you on your education journey.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

AccessAbility services are available to all students with a disability. Our AccessAbility Officers can work with you to develop an AccessAbility support plan which may include:

  • Communicating with teachers on your behalf when required
  • Providing sign language interpreters, readers and scribes
  • Loaning you assistive technology
  • Co-ordinating alternative assessment arrangements

Our Student Counsellors can help you with a range of support services including:

  • Deciding what career path to follow
  • General difficulties with student life
  • Personal and complex issues
  • Cross-cultural and special needs
  • Service referrals for long-term support
  • Short-term counselling

LEARNING SUPPORT

If you need help to achieve your study goals we are here for you. Our Learning Solutions team can help all students to develop study skills, organise your learning, understand vocabulary and complete assessments with free in class, one-on-one, small group, video calls and external support. They can assist you with:

  • Tutoring and class support
  • Help with assignments, referencing and essay writing
  • Online and phone support
  • Time management
  • Preparing for exams
  • Language, literacy and numeracy support
  • Studiosity: 24/7 on-demand, online study help for academic literacy skills and core subject support

INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUPPORT OFFICERS - SUPPORT WHEN YOU NEED IT

Indigenous Student Support Officers (ISSO's) are available to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students to reach their educational goals by providing support in a culturally sensitive manner.

Meet our team of Indigenous Student Support Officers:

ISSO's can assist with:

  • Centrelink ABSTUDY enquiries
  • Tutor support
  • Referrals to other community service providers
  • Personal support

LIBRARY SERVICES

Our library services help you access the information you need to succeed. Watch the below video to hear about some of the services our libraries offer.

TAFE Queensland's library network can be accessed via library.tafeqld.edu.au.

Here you can search library opening hours, live chat with a librarian, Ask-a-Librarian and register for helpful sessions including research and referencing help and virtual library sessions.

The library website is also where you log in to access online resources, reserve resources, find out due dates and renew your loans.

GRADUATIONS

If you're studying a certificate III, IV or diploma course and you finish before the end of 2023, you may be eligible to participate in a graduation. Graduations will occur in December 2023 in Cairns and Townsville.

TOWNSVILLE (PIMLICO) CAMPUS

The Townsville (Pimlico) campus recently underwent a $35 million redevelopment. The new campus features a state-of-the-art training kitchen, restaurant and simulated nursing wards, as well as hairdressing and beauty salons. The campus also has ample space in the student atrium to relax or study. Scroll to see some of the facilities on offer.

CAIRNS CAMPUS

The Cairns campus recently underwent $15 million refurbishment. Newly refurbished areas include a new Queenslander Café and student hub, Hair and Beauty training Hub, Electrical Capstone testing room, CO2 Cascade Trans-critical low temperature plant, and a PLC controlled freezer rooms. The student hub has lovely spaces for our students to study where you can charge a device, have a coffee and relax. Scroll to see some of our new facilities!
