“the value of community”

Mr Myles Hogarty

Principal

Greetings,

The long balmy summer looks like it is finally ending and the challenging conditions of Term One are now behind us, hopefully.

In my many years of experience in schools I cannot recall a community having to deal with the changes and disruptions to a school term quite like this one.

I must acknowledge and congratulate our College staff, students and families for displaying the values that form our yearly scriptural theme of, “Perseverance, Character and Hope.”

These words have been constant in our minds and actions as we have adapted to the issues of sickness, absenteeism, loss of employment and uncertainty among our community.

I am encouraged and often amazed by the Perseverance and resilience of our College community which has allowed the College to remain open all throughout this term for the benefit of our young men’s education, thank you all. Hope has helped us all get through this.

Parents, once again you have been heroic in having to run a family, maintain your own employment and motivate your son to keep his focus on school tasks, not to mention of course having to deal with Covid, I thank you. Your Character has been tested and you have won through.

When I reflect on the last 11 weeks, I feel we are indeed a blessed community as we have so much success to acknowledge and celebrate.

As members of this Lasallian community we rely on the generous, selfless attitude of members of our community to make all the events and activities happen for the young men and their families at De La Salle.

I thank our community who give of their time and energy for the goal of making the education of our young men a rich experience.

Some highlights over this term:

  • Opening Powhiri and welcome for our new students and staff.
  • Opening Dedication Day Mass and commissioning of our College Prefects
  • The successful Academic Counselling day with a 95% family attendance
  • The generosity of staff, parents and Old Boys for their running of College extra-curricular Sports, Retreats, Tuition, Mentoring sessions ,Young Vinnies.
  • The settled, calm classroom learning environment with a clear focus on raising all academic achievement.
  • The strength of our College’s Catholic and Lasallian character as witnessed in our Dedication Day, Holy Week and Easter traditions.
  • The continued focus of our College staff on strengthening their teaching practice through a targeted whole school Professional Development programme on raising Literacy standards across the whole College.
  • Growing numbers of boys who have registered for Summer and Winter Sports teams, something every boy should be involved in and if not, why not !!!!
  • The after-school Academic tuition programmes initiated by the Student Academic Portfolio to raise achievement.
  • The many and varied tasks done by our parents for the young men of De La Salle on a daily basis.

The above are just a selection of the vibrant learning opportunities offered by our community for the young men of De La Salle.

As a learning community we are fortunate to have such committed staff, family and Old Boys sharing a common vision for the College.

This week we have had three members of the Auckland Diocesan Catholic Character review team in the College to review our Catholic, Lasallian character.

The team will provide the College and our Proprietor Bishop Stephen Lowe a full report on our Catholic Lasallian character.

In some verbal feedback at the end of our review, the team did say that from their work in the College over the last week that it was very evident that the “Catholic Lasallian character is very much alive in De La Salle College.” A wonderful endorsement of all the efforts of our College community.

I wish our Staff, families and students a safe, restful and blessed Easter and holiday break. We look forward to a smooth, uninterrupted transition into our Winter term with our students having their clear “educational” goals at the centre of their focus.

Mr Dermot English

"The Journey"

I once spent two weeks in El Salvador, a country that suffered from a 14-year war, and even now high rates of violent crime. There were many mothers who had lost their adult sons, just as Mary did. They had a very deep understanding of the story of the Passion and Death of Jesus, as it had happened within their own families. In the last six months several of our boys have suffered the death of a parent or a sibling. How do we make sense of this, of bereavement and grief? This question is at the centre of Holy Week.

The journey of Jesus sanctifies suffering, it makes it holy, or to put it another way, it is a path to closer union with God. It is not a welcome path, but if we look back it is usually these types of events, as well as major illnesses and family struggles, that can be how we are forced to let go of what we thought was important. It’s a very tough call, but Jesus made it, and somehow it worked out. I guess that’s what we call faith.

Congratulations to everyone on your efforts during our journey this term. I wish you all the blessings of wisdom and peace during the Easter season and the family time that comes with it.

special character

Assistant Principal for Mission - Mr Kane Raukura

Dear Lasallians, families and friends of the College, this week is Holy Week. We stop and remember the last week of Jesus. It gives us an opportunity to recall what Jesus did and taught. Holy Week is a time for true reflection and prayer. Catholics remember that Jesus suffered and was tortured until he died. We believe he endured these things so that we could be saved from sin and enter the Kingdom of Heaven with him and with God. This week we are reminded that we must serve one another and put ourselves last as well as being a witness to our faith. Christs suffering strengthens us so that we suffer we draw on his strength his example of stoic resounding faith in the Lord.

YEAR 7 and 8 STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Our Year 7 and 8 students were invited to the College Chapel and were taken through the full Stations of the Cross. This was a reverent time and the boys were very respectful and attentive. They were taught the importance of this ancient ritual and were taught to meditate on the images and place themselves in the Passion Story two thousand years ago. This was a wonderful culmination of learning that had occurred up to Holy Week.

NEXT GENERATION TALK IN THE CITY

Five of our Year 13 students had the opportunity to hear a very interesting Guest Speaker present at the Auckland Catholic Tertiary Chaplaincy. Sr Jeanne Marie from Sisters for Life spoke to the students on Life and Love. The presentation was in depth and engaging. The boys came away with good ideas, goals and perceptions. We acknowledge and thank the Auckland Chaplaincy team for the chance to attend. Thanks to Mr. Joseph Nansen (Campus Minister) for accompanying the young men.

AUCKLAND DIOCESE SPECIAL CHARACTER REVIEW

This week the College was visited by the Review Team from the office of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland. This special review of our Catholic and Lasallian Character was last conducted in 2017. COVID delays the last two years kept postponing our scheduled times for the team to make their visit and finally we were able to have the review take place and even in person. The team consisted of Monica Johnson, Phillip Mahony and Bernadette Stockton, respected catholic educationalists and past Principals. While on campus with us they conducted various interviews, class visits and interviews (which included the Board, staff, students, parents and support staff). The initial verbal report has been extremely positive with solid constructive praise of our special character. A resounding comment was that we are actively and authentically Catholic. The school looks forward to the comprehensive written report.

HOLY THURSDAY LITURGY

Wonderfully the Prime Minister decreased our alert level to the ‘orange’ traffic light midnight Wednesday. This allowed us to celebrate a Holy Thursday liturgy in the MPC. This gathering was fantastic as it was the first time we had been together as a whole school since before August 2021. Father Martin gladly accepted our offer to do a reflection and a final blessing. Gabriel Toreja (Year 13) did an excellent reading of John 13:1-17 and Joseph Malele (Year 7) did a wonderful closing prayer. Included in the liturgy was a ‘Washing of the Feet’ ceremony. Teachers (including Father Martin and Mr. Hogarty) washed the feet of students from Years 7 to 13 in an act of service. Two beautiful new songs were used for the first time in the liturgy. You may enjoy listening to them….

Sing to Jesus by Fernando Ortega

The Gentle Healer by Michael Card

Looking ahead

  • Year 5/6 Feeder Schools Retreats Term Two
  • DLS Day May 20th
  • start of the Sacramental Programme

Let us pray..

Heavenly Father, thank You for the many lessons we can learn from the Word of Truth.

I pray that as I journey through life,

I may not miss any precious encounters with Christ along the way.

Help me to do all things to Your praise and glory,

and in everything give thanks.

This I ask in Jesus' name,

Amen.

Year 11 Parent Partnership

Focus of the partnership meeting: Addressing the importance of NCEA, how it works and how parents can help track NCEA credits each term.

The year 11 parent partnership meeting that took place on Thursday 7 April was a big success. Thank you for joining the meeting on Teams.

We had Gregory Filimoehala and Benedict Papalii speak about the importance of NCEA, how parents can support their sons and their advice for their fellow brothers in their year level. Gregory did his speech in Tongan and Benedict did his in Samoan and they both summarised this in English after.

The Year 11 film club boys put together a video on NCEA tracking and BYOD below.

Mr D'Souza- year 11 Dean spoke about the importance of BYOD and Mr Doyle spoke about all the important info regarding NCEA Level 1.

Charm Tuala (head boy) spoke about his own experiences with NCEA, and he passed on his advice to his younger brothers. Advice was around self-management and time-management.

We then had a talanoa where parents were welcome to type out questions or ask them directly.

Overall great feedback from parents and students. Was good to have boys, parents and staff share their voice on the night.

In Mr D’Souza’s Year 7 Technology class they made the popular american treat S'mores with their solar ovens.

A s'more is a campfire treat, consisting of one or more toasted marshmallows and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker. S'mores are traditionally cooked over a campfire, although they can also be made at home over the flame of a wood-burning fireplace, in an oven, over a stove's flame, in a microwave, or made in a panini press. A marshmallow, usually held by a metal or wooden skewer, is heated over the fire until it is golden brown. Traditionally, the marshmallow is gooey but not burnt, but, depending on individual preference and cooking time, marshmallows can range from barely warm to charred. The roasted marshmallow is then sandwiched between two halves of a graham cracker and a piece of chocolate (or with chocolate on both top and bottom), between the graham crackers. An additional step may follow, where the entire sandwich is wrapped in foil and heated so that the chocolate partially melts.

9R Zine Project

This term 9R worked on creating a small, self-published zine. A zine is made up of original or appropriated text and images about any topic! Click here for a sample of a zine designed by Evander Su'a in year 9 issuu.com/dlsnz/docs/evander_su_a_y9

Evander Su'a - 9GAN

Our class focused on the topic of Hauora (well-being) which helped them explore various topics such as mental health, physical health/fitness and spirituality.

Paul Manuel-Fa’avae - 11FAR

Some students explored other topics such as how to stay safe on social media and how music can be used to reduce stress or uplift their day. 9R enjoyed the creative process and freedom to explore different layouts, collaging and incorporating QR codes.

The zines are now displayed in the library where students and staff can take one home.

gateway

Mr Grant Hobbs - Gateway/Trades Co-ordinator

Trades

After a tough start to the year our Trades and Gateway programmes have settled down well and we have seen both of our Trades programmes at NZMA and MIT going well. Our young men are doing Construction, Mechanic work and Pre Police. All are going well and attendance is getting better.

It is great to see our year 13s from last year at NZMA. Raseli, Junior and Iain are doing a great job on the Construction course.

SPOTLESS

We have 10 students taking part in the Spotless programme over the school holidays. This is working together with Kainga Ora and Downers. The students get to experience a number of different Trades in the two weeks and hopefully network with different employers during the holidays.

WAREHOUSE & COUNTDOWN

25 of our young men took part in the Countdown and Warehouse programme during a one week work experience. Usually the programme is one day a week for the term but we tried two programmes to do in the week. Both programmes were very successful. There is still an assessment to do at the beginning of next term.

THE AIRPORT

This is a new opportunity for De La Salle College. Because of the great work of our young men at the Warehouse and Countdown, we have been given an opportunity to do a two week work experience for our year 13 students. They will get many different opportunities to try different aspects of Airport work and again a great opportunity for possible future employment.

CHEFS COURSE

This holidays we also will be running a chefs school at Sky City. This is a great opportunity for Tesi a year 11 who has shown good maturity and will be doing a Gateway programme during the holidays.

So, a very busy term and great to see support from our teachers allowing our young men opportunities on work experience.

It is humbling to see Easter ahead and realise how lucky we are to be at a school that recognises strong Christian values and takes part in the life of Christ during this time.

The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”

Matthew 28:5-6

God bless. He has risen.
