Class 4 Summer 2 learning journey

Literacy

Our first outcome this half term was to write a non-chronological report about Mary Anning.

First, we explored the difference between fiction and non fiction texts. We then looked at some examples of non- chronological reports and explored the features.

We shared an extract of ‘Stone girl’ and scanned QR codes to gather more information about Mary Anning.

Children researched their own facts and information about Mary Anning to use in their non-chronological reports.

We looked at the technical vocabulary we might include and found the definition of these ambitious words.

We applied these words in our writing.

We identified punctuation and explored different sentence types.

We wrote our own statements, questions and exclamations.

We worked in pairs or small groups to create sentences using conjunctions. We also looked at using them at the beginning of the sentences.

Ensuring that our report is written in past tense.

We explored different sentence openers.

We then used these in our writing.

Our final text was Billy and the Minpins.

As a hook, we pieced together the front cover and made predictions about the story.

We loved reading the story.

We used adjectives and noun phrases to add detail.

We included these in our setting description.

Some of us were able to retell the story through a story map.

Maths

This half term was all about filling any gaps.

We revisited measure including capacity, temperature and mass.

We used our knowledge to reason and solve problems.

We then revisited the four operations.

We used a method of our choice to solve problems.

We have become more confident with our arithmetic and mental maths.

Science

We continued exploring materials and their properties.

We compared materials and their properties.

We were able to group materials into natural and man made.

We worked scientifically and carried out an experiment to compare the properties.

Religious Education

This half term we looked at question 6.

How do I and others feel about life and the universe around us.

First, we looked at Christianity.

We explored the Lord’s Prayer and why it is important to Christian’s.

We then looked at the creation story from the Bible and described what happened on each day.

Our second religion was Judaism.

We acted out the story of Noah’s arc and asked some puzzling questions about the story.

We then looked at the story of Moses and answered questions about the events in his life.

Our final religion was Islam.

We looked at why the world is important to Muslims and identified ways in which they care for the world.

RSHE

Living in the wider world

We looked at how to care for the school environment. We then looked at the different roles and responsibilities people have in our community. Finally we spoke about how not all the information seen online is true.

PE

PE this term was all about learning new skills to prepare us for sports day.

Using control and precision when learning shotput.

Completing a variety of activity stations.

Building our running strength.

Applying our skills at sportsday.

Topic

Music

We listened to difference pieces of music and discussed what we liked and dislike and how it made us feel.

We learnt about pitch. We identified high and low notes.

We experimented with pitch on the glockenspiel.

We created and performed our own pitch pattern.

We then looked at graphic notation and invented our own symbols.

We created musical sound effects for a short sequence.

Our final outcome was to play the sequence on the glockenspiel.

Some of us then challenged ourselves by planning ‘twinkle, twinkle little star’.

We then sang songs in unison.

Art

We explored artwork by the artist Dennis Creffield and discussed the similarities, differences and our favourite pieces.

We used patterns and textures to create a drawing in the style of Dennis Creffield.

This half term we celebrated our individuality by dressing in bright colours for Pride month. We enjoyed discussing how we are all unique.

We dressed in purple to raise awareness and money for Juvenile Arthritis.

Celebrating our love of reading.

These superstars wrote book reviews and character descriptions.

Children who read at least four times a week were rewarded with reading badges and prizes.

Class 4 won the reading challenge!

I hope lots of children in Class 4 complete the summer reading challenge.
