Day of Discovery 2023 The Traveling Monarchs

Description of DoD

1. Dream Girls

For the first day of discovery trip, a group of monarchs traveled to the Omaha Community Playhouse to see the musical Dream Girls. Before seeing the show, the girls toured the Playhouse and saw what happens behind the scenes and even got to meet the cast members at the end.

2. Hiking in the Hills

This group of Monarchs got to spend all day out in nature hiking at Fontenelle Forest. The girls got to explore the environment around them, and even see live raptors from feet away.

3. Cultural Authenticity

The Cultural Authenticity trip encouraged this group of monarchs to dive deeper into understanding “culture”. The girls met for dinner at Via Farina for a true Italian dinner the ventured to the Blue Barn Theatre to see “The Chinese Lady”.

After the wonderful dinner and beautiful performance, the girls were able to see a new perspective on “culture” and how it is seen in America.

4. Back in Time and Out of this World

One Day of Discovery took place in Lincoln Nebraska, where the Monarchs got to explore an interactive museum at UNL. The girls learned about natural history and the universe and even got to see the Stellar Show at the Planetarium.

5. Triple Threat Art Making at Hot Shops

At Hot shops the Monarchs created three unique pieces of art through glassblowing, painting, and creative printmaking. The girls learned from professional instructors and used many different techniques to make art.

6. Spielbound Spectacular

Phones and electronic devices were unwelcome on this trip. The Monarchs who traveled to Spielbound spent their day with board games and coffee.

7. Mini Apples? You Betcha.

A two day overnight trip took place in Minneapolis and St. Paul MN. The activities varied from museums to restaurants providing a vast experience of culture and arts.

8. VIP Tour Experience at Methodist Women’s Hospital

This Day of Discovery took a special interest to Monarchs hoping to go into the medical field. The girls toured the hospital and got to see special experiences such as a baby’s first bath and mother/baby floor.

9. Move and Meditate

Two of Mercy’s staff lead this Day of Discovery full of movement. Ms. Mergens instructed a fun jazzercise class followed by Ms. Gonderinger’s aligning yoga class. The trip concluded with a salad bar and a relaxing meditation session.

This trip allowed the girls to relax both their minds and bodies. It also focused on their mental and physical awareness and health as well.

10. Women in the Construction Industry

This group of Monarchs spent the morning at The Waldinger Corporation where they got hands-on training in their production shop, and learned about the many opportunities for women in the construction industry. Then they traveled to the Facebook Data Centers to tour the finished buildings that Waldinger helped construct.

11. Lifetime of Self Care

This day of Discovery began with with a tour of Lifetime Fitness’s facility. It followed with pampering in the sauna, a 1 hour core and kick boxing combo class with one of their on site physical trainers! And Concluded with pizza from Dante Restaurant.

12. Havana Nights: Private Salsa and Bachata Lessons

A groin- of Monarchs joined Señoras Davis and Dongilli for an afternoon of Latin dance and cuisine! The first hour was devoted to salsa and the second hour was dedicated to bachata: both popular styles danced in the U.S. and abroad!

The Monarchs learned a new style of dancing and tried new foods all together!

13. Behind the Scenes at the Zoo

On this exciting Day of Discovery, the monarchs got to enjoy the opportunity to see what life at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo is like behind the scenes. The monarchy’s got to see and feed animals up close and spend extra time at the Aquarium and with the giraffes.
