VISUAL ARTS AT RAVENSBOURNE UNIVERSITY Y12 VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS

On Wednesday 11th January 2023 we were invited to take all our Y12 Visual Arts students on a Discovery Day at Ravensbourne University. This was a great opportunity for all our aspiring young creatives to see and experience what it is like to study higher education in a university setting...

Students embarked on a carousel of different activities throughout the day such as campus tours, introductions to student life and taster workshops. There was also an opportunity to connect with their team of student ambassadors and to find out what it's like to be a student at Ravensbourne... our ambassador guides were Sneha and Daniel, both ex LPGS students who were with us last academic year.

When we arrived we all moved into a large open plan teaching studio where the students were given a photography brief. They were all asked to use their smartphones in order to take a series of photographs around the university building, starting at the roof top with amazing views across London. We then gradually worked our way down and through the building to the ground floor continuing to take images, creating a narrative of the space.

Back in the studio the students set about editing their images and then sharing them with their peers and staff through an open verbal critique. It was really good to see all our students involved in this process, chatting about their work and reflecting on the outcomes of others.

We then took part in a Q&A session which involved current Ravensbourne first year students talking about their experience of applying to Ravensbourne, being interviewed, and their current experiences of studying at Ravensbourne in their first year.

After lunch we then had a guided tour of the university looking at all the specialist work and study areas such as the print building, TV studios, computer area, kit store, fashion rooms etc.

Many thanks to all the staff and our extremely helpful ambassadors at Ravensbourne for making us all welcome and enabling our students to get a feel for what it must be like to study in a university setting.
