From March 13-17, Dow High Student Leadership 2 conducted a campaign to promote safe driving and educate the student body on the dangers of distracted driving. This campaign was part of a statewide initiative called Strive for a Safer Drive. Organized by Ford Motor Company and the Office of Highway Safety Patrol, this program provides grant money to schools to help fund their campaigns and get students invested in learning about safety for teen drivers. Throughout the week, students were able to participate in a variety of lunchtime events, such as trivia and driving simulators, to earn an opportunity to win several grand prizes at the end of the week. Event organizers were also able to inform the community about the event and the importance of safe driving through local tv and newspaper interviews discussing the campaign. This campaign was organized by the following members of Student Leadership 2: Wil Kuper (12), Zack Parker (12), Emilee Bonter (11), Amelia Urlaub (11), and Jessica Chai (10). This was Wil's second year serving as the student lead for this project. Students are currently working on completing a presentation of the campaign's success to submit to Strive for a Safer Drive. The top five campaigns from the state will receive a cash prize for their student organization.
Student Leadership would like to thank the following local experts on safe driving education for providing their time and resources to help make our campaign great: Trooper Christopher Kustra (MSP Community Service Trooper), Kelli Jankens (MyMichigan Health), Mary Kunz (ThinkFirst: National Injury Prevention Foundation), and Laura Walker (Covenant Health Care). Additional thanks go to Quick Reliable Printing and MJ Design Studio for generously donating punch cards and prizes for the event.

On Wednesday April 5, 2023, Midland High School inducted sixty-six juniors from the Class of 2024 into the Chemic Chapter of the National Honor Society. They join the fifty-six current members (Class of 2023) who are seniors. In total, we recognized one hundred-twenty-two students in our Chapter for their Service, Scholarship, Leadership, and Character. These students have been challenged like no other in the history of Midland High academics. From the pandemic to navigating changes in the delivery style of their education, these students have endured and overcome significant obstacles. Despite everything life has thrown at them, they have continued to excel in the classroom and serve their community with grace, pride and honor.
The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Captain Melanie Mance. Captain Mance has served our country in the U.S. Army for the past eleven years. She has 7 years of higher education, earning a B.A. in Communications Integrated Marketing from John Carroll University, an M.B.A from Trident University, and an M.S. Geological Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology. She is an Engineer Officer but her present title is: Company Commander of the Bay City Recruiting Company covering Mid-Michigan to Northern Michigan. In past years, she has served in Kuwait, Iraq, and Syria.
We are so proud of our Chemic Chapter of the National Honor Society. We especially want to wish our Senior members the best of luck as they step out into the world beyond the walls of Midland High. Just as Captain Mance stated in her speech, we cannot wait to see the next “great thing” you accomplish!
On Friday, April 7th, 35 future Chemics participated in an Easter egg hunt in the front yard of Midland High School. The kids were excited to search for over 1200 eggs. After the egg hunt, they also were able to participate in 3 different crafts with some Midland High Leadership students.
A big thank you goes out to the MHS Student Leadership volunteers who helped this past week by filling eggs, cleaning the grounds, and assisting the kids with the crafts. Everyone had a great time!

Once school has ended for the year, Midland Public Schools will once again be offering the Summer eLearning Program. Through this program, online courses are available to high school students who wish to earn initial credit in select courses. If you are interested in Credit Recovery courses this year, please contact your building administration.
While being onsite is not a requirement for daily work or quizzes, tests and exams must be monitored. This can be by appointment onsite or by appointment virtually. Appointments will be scheduled with the teacher on duty between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm on Mondays - Thursdays unless other arrangements are made. Students should expect to invest 45-60 hours to complete each course but may work on their course at any place where they have an internet connection.
Courses will begin on June 5, 2023, and must be completed by August 4, 2023. Students may only register for one course at a time. The cost for each course is $150 for Standard Edgenuity courses (EDG - Edgenuity on course list) and $235 for Edgenuity Instructional Services courses (EDGIS - Edgenuity Instructional Services on course list) for Midland Public Schools students and $175 or $250 for students outside of the MPS district. Registration opens on April 24th. If you would like additional information or would like to register for a course, use this link: https://www.midlandps.org/parents/elearning
