The Sedona Experience August 21st-25th 2024

Welcome!

Come join us on an epic 5 day photo adventure through Sedona, Arizona, one of the most iconic landscape photography destinations in the American West.

We will be chasing the best light, from sunrise to sunset, exploring and photographing the countless locations that make Sedona truly a world-class destination for landscape photography. When the sun goes down we’ll be out shooting the amazing landscape under the canopy of the night sky as you have never seen before!

The Itinerary

August 21

We will meet for a sunset shoot and we hope that because it is monsoon season we will be capturing dynamic skies caused by a few storms rolling through in the distance. We will also be shooting under a new moon so we will have plenty of opportunities to shoot the stars.

We will have a brief orientation and dinner and drinks at Oak Creek Brewery and Grill

August 22

We will wake up early in the morning to catch the first rays of light peaking over the horizon from the Airport Mesa View. One of the most iconic sunrise viewpoints in Sedona. Short hikes are available from the main overlook to capture different compositions. We will then head back to the hotel for some downtime and lunch.

In the afternoon we'll find ourselves exploring the Amitabha Stupa and Peace park. Sitting majestically among the pinion and juniper pines, and surrounded by a landscape of stunning crimson spires, it is a jewel to behold.

We will break for dinner and reunite to go photograph the amazing milkyway rising over the red rocks.

August 23

We'll be up early this morning exploring the views from the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Set directly into the solid red Sedona rocks, the chapel location commands magnificent views of the surrounding area and nearby Mystic Hills. The Chapel surroundings is also one of the famous 4 vortex in Sedona that is full of energy fields. After taking some amazing photographs while achieving spiritual enlightenment, we'll come back to the hotel for some downtime in the afternoon as well as lunch followed by a short image critique.

In the late afternoon we'll be heading out to Cathedral Rock for a short hike to one of the best locations in Sedona to capture the sunset.

August 24

This morning we'll sleep in, getting some well needed rest. We'll get together in the late morning for a photo critique and quick workflow/post-processing session before departing for an off-road adventure on Shebly Hill Road gaining access to some of the best vistas in the area. Only accessible by four wheel drive.

We'll come back to town in the evening for dinner before heading out to shoot night photography and light painting.

Afterglow: Night photography, star trails and light painting

Depending on weather, when the sky is clear we will head out in the evenings to capture the Sedona night sky. The landscape transforms under the Sedona night sky. It's truly an otherworldly experience. Capture Sedona in a completely unique way as you learn to shoot star trails, light painting and more. We will teach you how to photograph the milkyway, startrails and how light paint your foreground.

August 25

This morning we'll be waking up early for one last sunrise. We like to go out with a wow, so if you are interesed we can organize a hot Air ballon ride.

Afterwards we'll come back to the hotel to pack and check out and have one last goodbye before catching a shuttle back to the airport.

We strongly recommend flying in on the . We’ll be meeting for a quick orientation at the hotel. For those arriving early enough, we'll head out for a sunset shoot close by before a welcome dinner and drinks, getting to know each other and reviewing the itinerary for the days ahead.

Transportation

There are 2 Airports to fly into to get to Sedona

FLAGSTAFF AIRPORT which is the closest small commercial airport to Sedona, just a 40-minute scenic drive south through beautiful Oak Creek Canyon.

PHOENIX SKY HARBOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (PHX) Most Sedona visitors fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport located 2 hour drive from Phoenix to Sedona.

We will be providing transportation throughout the workshop to all locations. However, due to everyone's unique flight schedules and departure locations, we ask you to make arrangements to get from the airport to the hotel. We recommend using the Groom Shuttle Service.

We will be providing all transportation from here on in for the rest of the trip. There is no need to rent a car. If you would like to rent your own car feel free to do so. Know that this will not be necessary so long as you are remaining with the group for the entirety of the workshop.

Gear Guide

  • Digital Camera Body (DSLR or mirrorless is fine, (smartphones are welcome too)
  • Wide angle (12-24, 16-35 etc) - great for wide sweeping landscapes and nightscapes
  • Medium telephoto (24-70, 24-105) - great for all around photography landscape to portrait to moderate close up and detail shots
  • Telephoto - (70mm and beyond) - great for compressing the landscape and tighter compositions
  • Sturdy tripod with ballhead & tripod plate
  • Extra batteries
  • Memory cards
  • Remote shutter release (tethered or wireless)
  • Filters (Optional) Circular polarizer, Graduated Neutral Density filter, 10 Stop Neutral Density Filter

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations received at least 60 days prior to the workshop start date: We refund any tuition paid, with the exception of a $50 processing fee.
  • For cancellations received 30 to 60 days prior to the start of the workshop: We refund any tuition paid, with the exception of a $100 processing fee.
  • For cancellations received within 30 days prior to the start of the workshop: We retain full tuition.
