The fifth graders at Siebert Elementary held their annual PYP Exhibition on Thursday, May 18. Students worked within the transdisciplinary theme, Who We Are, to research and take action on worldly issues in order to make an impact.
The PYP Exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our fifth graders as they prepare for the big transition to middle school.
This action project puts the students in the driver’s seat and gives them the agency to design their own learning experience based on their passion and inquiry.
We know our fifth graders at Siebert will go on to do great things for our world and community. As always, it’s a great day to be a Siebert Bulldog!
This past week, DHS student Olivia Wagner competed as a finalist at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Dallas, Texas. She was awarded the Air Force Special Award for her project in the category of energy and sustainable materials. She was only one of four students in the state of Michigan who earned an award. Over 1,800 students from around the world competed at this fair. Congratulations, Olivia!
Chinese Music Presentation at Jefferson Middle School
On Tuesday, May 16th, Dr. Joe Chai presented Chinese music instruments to the Mandarin classes at Jefferson Middle School. The Mandarin 1 & 1A students not only saw the musical instruments they had learned, but also heard the wonderful live performances. Dr. Chai also had another surprise for the students - a new Chinese musical instrument, the Chinese gourd flute. The students were very excited to ask him questions in Chinese. He patiently answered all the questions, and the students were very happy with the Chinese communication skills they had learned.
Dr. Chai played a graceful classic repertoire on the Chinese flute for the students - "Spring on Xiang River". Below is a video of some of the beautiful music! Thank you Dr. Chai!
Woodcrest 5th grade Students learn Chinese Kung Fu culture from Master Chung
Last Friday all 5th Grade students in Woodcrest Elementary School, taught by Chinese teachers Jingcheng Wang and Lifang Qiu, learned Chinese Kung Fu culture from Master Chung. Master Chung is a Midland local Kungfu Master. He taught students the culture of Chinese Kungfu and demonstrated some basic Kungfu. Students listened to the presentation and practiced some basic Chinese Kungfu.
See the students and Master Chung in action in the video below!
The "Science of Reading" at MPS - Early Elementary Literacy Instruction
Once school has ended for the year, Midland Public Schools will once again be offering the Summer eLearning Program. Through this program, online courses are available to high school students who wish to earn initial credit in select courses. If you are interested in Credit Recovery courses this year, please contact your building administration.
While being onsite is not a requirement for daily work or quizzes, tests and exams must be monitored. This can be by appointment onsite or by appointment virtually. Appointments will be scheduled with the teacher on duty between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm on Mondays - Thursdays unless other arrangements are made. Students should expect to invest 45-60 hours to complete each course but may work on their course at any place where they have an internet connection.
Courses will begin on June 5, 2023, and must be completed by August 4, 2023. Students may only register for one course at a time. The cost for each course is $150 for Standard Edgenuity courses (EDG - Edgenuity on course list) and $235 for Edgenuity Instructional Services courses (EDGIS - Edgenuity Instructional Services on course list) for Midland Public Schools students and $175 or $250 for students outside of the MPS district. Registration opens on April 24th. If you would like additional information or would like to register for a course, use this link: https://www.midlandps.org/district/summer-program
