Introduction: Welcome to Shuttle X, a dynamic collaboration born from the diverse talents of four visionary students from distinct academic disciplines.
The Service
ShuttleX distributes and operates a series of on-campus shuttles for students to commute around campus.
Each shuttle is propelled sustainably by solar panels, and driven forward by student engagement.
Students are able to board and disembark from the shuttle at will, and may choose from a selection of four constantly running routes around and within campus.
How the service works?
The shuttles are driven by SJSU students who are hired through the Career Center of the university. We chose to hire students instead to help further foster community on campus.
Each shuttle carries a capacity of 6-8 passengers including the driver of the shuttle and is equipped with a seat and seatbelt in the back for those with disabilities.
The shuttle service runs on a 12 hour schedule from 8am-8pm, and their frequency fluctuates based on demand and a statistical model made of student ID swipe data that is registered anonymously in our database.
Students who peddle and swipe their student ID are eligible to win prizes selected at the end of the week. Each 10 watt hours produced is a raffle ticket, and prizes range from free snacks to bookstore credits and movie tickets
Who are our stakeholders?
Commuters
Commuting students and faculty make up our largest set of stakeholders. We know our responsibility to fill in and help serve students and staff as a "last mile" connection between VTA and the campus, as well as serving the south campus parking lot, connecting destinations just outside of a comfortable walking distance to make the SJUS campus, and ultimately a higher education more accessible.
ShuttleX will serve the BART station planned for Santa Clara street that is included in the 2030 master plan, enabling better connection for east-bay commuters, and serving as their last mile.
Handicapped accessibility
The SJSU campus is walkable, but what about those who can't?
Without a PARA-transit system on campus, students with disabilities need to carefully plan ahead diligently and still rush to get to their classes on time. Shuttle X serves to bridge these students without obstructing them, granting them a seamless way to worry less, and learn more.
Serving as a last mile is additionally important for those with disabilities, so ShuttleX is a necessity for VTA and BART to function accessibly given their own lack of a PARA-transit system.
Additional Stakeholders
SJSU event planning will utilize Shuttle X to better connect students from dorms and nearby off campus housing to better integrate the campus into events, connecting students more, and allowing more students to grow their spartan pride.
SJSU Parking services has an integral role in allowing the shuttle to exist, but will also be one of the greatest users, enabling more parking flexibility for students who commute by car- offering less hassle to use the south campus lot, as well as more sustainable alternatives for service vehicles presently in use on campus.
