Big Picture visit to Morisset High School

Mr Patmore and Ms Healy travelled to Morisset High School this week to observe the Big Picture model that has been running there for many years. They were able to talk to students and teachers involved in the program and get a greater understanding of the Big Picture model.

Remembrance Day

Last Friday was the 104th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War in 1918. The school gathered in the quadrangle at the 11th hour of the 11th month to pause and commemorate Remembrance Day.

Our School Captains Jessica and Dylan were involved in the Remembrance Day ceremony at Maroubra which involved laying of a wreath to honour the memory of the men and women who have served and are currently serving.

COVID 19 updates

NSW Health recently advised that they are starting to see a rise in COVID-19 transmissions within the community, with a peak of cases expected in early December. Currently we have several students diagnosed with COVID-19 this week, and one staff member that we know of.

NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, has been warning the wider community to be vigilant around social distancing, and taking precautionary hygiene measures to reduce transmission of the new strains of virus that are circulating.

Please keep your child at home if they are unwell. Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are available from the School. We encourage all students, staff and families to keep up-to-date with their vaccinations, including COVID-19 booster shots if eligible.

NSW Health are also encouraging everyone in the community to continue to register positive RATs with Service NSW, to ensure they receive timely support and advice, including access to antivirals for those eligible.

New model calculators available

At subsidised price of $20

An important item required by all students studying Mathematics in high school is a scientific calculator. It is a valuable educational tool that allows students to reach a higher level of mathematical calculation and understanding.

All students must have a scientific calculator for each of their Maths lessons.

Calculators come in a number of sizes and styles, and they cover a tremendous range of capabilities, functions and prices.

At South Sydney High School we recommend the Casio FX82AU Plus II 2nd Edition Scientific Calculator. This calculator is approved by NESA and will meet the needs for students studying Mathematics in Year 7 through to Year 12 HSC.

To assist parents, we purchase the Casio Plus FX82AU Plus II 2nd Edition Scientific Calculator directly from CASIO and sell at a subsidised price of $20. However, this price is limited to the current stock we have on hand.

Students needing a calculator can pay and collect their calculator at the student office.

If you have any questions or issues regarding purchasing a calculator, please feel free to contact me at school.

Library news

Know your stuff for Know-vember

For the month of November, we are focusing on our Non-Fiction collection. Expand your knowledge and research skills – what are you curious about?

Library resource overdue notices

The Library issues overdue notices to students and staff at various times during school terms. The aim of the overdue notices is to serve as a reminder to return overdue items to the Library. These slips contain the title, author and barcode of the resource, the date borrowed and due date. It also contains the cost of the item. There has been some confusion about the cost appearing on the overdue notices. This is not a fine. The cost is listed in the event the Library resource has been lost or damaged and a replacement will need to be paid for by the borrower. If students or staff need to pay for a lost or damaged resource, please inform Library staff and pay at the student office.

End of year student clearance

The end of year student clearance is where students return school resources they have loaned during the school year. Library resources and equipment need to be returned by the end of Week 7 (Friday 25th November) for Years 7, 8, 9 & 10.

Year 11 are to return their Library resources and equipment by the end of Week 8 (Friday 2nd December). Thank you for your assistance in locating and returning these items.

Our Yarning Circle is finally under construction!

The construction started yesterday and we hope it will be finished by approximately 7th December.

We are very fortunate to have services of NPMI to help with the project - an Indigenous Projects and Construction Service npmindigenous.com.au.

Funding was provided from Randwick Council, DoE and Training Services RIEP (Regional Industry Education Partnerships) to build a Yarning Circle at the school. It will be located next to the outdoor classroom.

As of Monday 21st November, students will be involved in the construction of the Yarning Circle.

There will be a traditional smoking ceremony at the conclusion of the build.

I can't believe that this dream that started about 2 years ago is finally happening and thank you for your support! I would also like to thank Rick, our GA in advance for his wisdom and help!

Below is a picture of the area before construction, and after day 1!

Junior SSCIM Camp

Mr Callaghan, Ms Gore and Ms de Paor met last Wednesday before a final planning meeting on Friday with the students attending Junior SSCIM Camp. As we reviewed the Project Based Learning that the students planned to embark on at SSCIM Camp we were suitably impressed by the calibre of the work that these students had outlined. Their projects aim to maximise the potential students have identified in our beautiful bush location. Their projects include: musical composition, making short films, creating porfolios of data on the flora and fauna of the surrounding bush as well as sketching and making water colours of the natural environment. We look forward to sharing these completed projects with the school community via the school newsletter and during our Enrichment Recognition assemblies to be held before the end of the school year.

SSCIM Club

With the planning for Junior SSCIM Camp well underway we have had busy Fridays in SSCIM Club as students discuss projects, allocate bedrooms and plan menus for our Camp. Meanwhile chess skills and even robotics are further pursuits that have kept our keen SSCIM Club members busy.

Year 5 Enrichment Program (5X5EP)

We have loved welcoming Year 5 students to enjoy our first post-COVID SSEP program. Our wonderful student mentors have also enjoyed leading and assisting these students during the following workshops:

Week 1 (27th October) Orientation

Ms de Paor and Ms Gore together with our Year 9 student mentors and our school Principal Ms Neilsen were delighted to welcome our first South Sydney Enrichment Program cohort on 27th October.

Our orientation session was followed by a school tour for the Year 5 students while their parents had an opportunity to chat to Ms Neilsen, Ms Gore and Ms de Paor over morning tea. The workshop activities for the remainder of the day were primarily team based allowing students to participate in drama and sporting pursuits that afforded them the opportunity to challenge themselves and get to know one another in a fun environment.

Week 2 (3rd November) The Mathematics of Strategic Games

The mathematical skills of estimation, recognition of patterns and relationships, interpretation and spatial reasoning was the focus of the activities students took part in during the second workshop day of our program.Students began the day in small groups discussing and solving challenging puzzles that allowed them to think deeply and laterally about a variety of problems.

For the remainder of the day they were afforded the opportunity compete in challenging games of strategy including tangrams, rubix cube, chess, checkers and solve brain teaser puzzles. They also enjoyed a Chess Masterclass with our guest Chessmaster. Improving or learning the techniques to succeed in this ultimate game of strategy allowed for improvement of their skills - the skills of those for whom chess was already a familiar pursuit while affording others a fun opportunity to become familiar with the game.

Week 3 (10th November) Our Fragile World

The ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and drive innovation are essential skills required to ensure the survival of our planet was the inspiration behind the activities that students undertook during this project day. They were afforded opportunities to be informed and think critically in a variety of workshop contexts about the challenges facing our planet and how these may be addressed.

The day began with research, reporting and discussion of the damage wrought by recent storms on Lismore and Queensland. While a hands-on model building workshop aimed at demonstrating erosion, as well as drama challenges and performances, requied students to think about and enact their everyday environmental impact on the planet and provided them with fun and challenge.
