IB and Ap testing fee waiver

At the October 17 meeting, the Midland Public Schools Board of Education took action to eliminate testing fees for MPS students enrolled in MPS International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) titled courses. This fee waiver is in effect for the 2022-2023 school year. The intention of this action is to provide financial relief for families and to increase the number of students who take these assessments, which can lead to college credit with qualifying scores.

If a student has already registered for a spring 2023 IB and AP assessment and is enrolled in the corresponding IB or AP course, they will not be invoiced for the cost of the assessments. If a student has not yet registered and is now considering taking the assessment, they must register by October 28, 2022. Below is a link to the registration form.

Students registering for an IB or AP assessment are expected to attend the assessment session and give their best effort. Students who cancel their registration after the deadline or do not attend the assessment session will be invoiced for the cost of the assessment.

If you have questions about registering for an IB or AP spring assessment, please contact your school counselor.

What is the Early Middle College Program? The EMC program is a five-year program of study. We work closely with two post-secondary partners, Davenport University and Delta College, to provide students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and one or more of the following: 60 transferable credits, an associate degree, or a professional certificate. Almost all expenses are paid for by MPS. For more information, click the button below.

Orchestra Happenings: The Music Care Program took place for the first time since COVID-19 this past Friday on October 14, 2022. The program is a great way for musicians to volunteer their time and talent by playing in the lobby of the MyMichigan hospital. Performers this past Friday included Zaky El-Nachef, Hope Ridley, Caden Cummings, Maia Figueroa, and Sarah Li. Students who are interested may check out the Music Care Program info on the mymichigan website or contact musicareprogram@gmail.com for more information. On Saturday, October 15, the Dow High Orchestras traveled to the Max M. and Marjorie Fisher Music Center in Detroit to watch the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. This is the students' first field trip to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra since everything shut down for Covid-19. They were able to watch one of the best orchestras in the country perform music by Prokofiev and Mozart. The performance also featured world-renowned cello soloist Kian Soltani who performed the Haydn Cello Concerto and a personal composition, Persian Fire Dance.
This past week Economic Classes at Midland High School welcomed Nate Surbrook, CEO and Owner of Nate's Hot Dog Cart, to come to speak to their classes about the joys and challenges of owning a private business. Econ Classes learn about different business structures; sole proprietors, partnerships, and corporations. Nate, a senior at MHS, has owned Nate's Hot Dog Cart for the past four years. Students had a chance to ask questions about starting a business, funding, logistics, inventory, hot dog pricing, competition, Covid, and Nate's future plans. Nate shared his personal story about wanting to open a donut shop in the 7th grade and once his parents heard this, they invested in a $13,000 hot dog cart. Nate said it took about 4 years to get really noticed even though they've been at the Farmer's Market for years. His cart also can be found on the campus of Northwood University as well as at local community events like River Days. Nate talked about what it's like to work with so many people as he's the face of the cart who interacts with all customers. In the future, he'd like to attend Northwood University to earn a Business Degree and maybe open a restaurant- called Blazing Canines! Good Luck Nate!

Over the last two weeks, all 4th and 5th Grade students at Woodcrest Elementary, taught by Chinese teachers Mr. Wang and Mrs. Qiu as well as Art teacher, Mrs. Hall, participated in the China Art Program. The guest teacher Dr. Dolores, the Midland County 4-H program coordinator, did presentations about "vision letters." Chinese children drew and brought Chinese artifacts for students to explore. Mr. Wang and Mrs. Qiu introduced the artifacts and answered students' questions when they explored Chinese culture. For the coming weeks students will also draw a "vision letter" to show their life in Michigan and Art teacher Mrs. Hall will help the students complete drawings. Some of their artwork will be selected to be sent to China to display. In this event, students have the opportunity to explore Chinese culture and express their own cultures.
