AMHERST, Mass. — On Friday, Oct. 4, the Center for Multicultural Advancement and Student Success in conjunction with the UMass Police Department hosted its Amazing Race Competition. Battling the elements, 31 teams consisting of three members competed against each other, vying for the title of Amazing Race Champions.

From eating donuts at Berkshire Dining Commons to singing their hearts out at the Off Campus Student Center, participants put in the hard work before ending the night at Wilder Hall. All were treated to wings, pizza and refreshments.

Participants congregated outside Wilder Hall in the darkness for orientation from UMPD Lt. Thomas O'Donnell after checking in with CMASS staff.

Participants received their t-shirts in Wilder Hall and got excited!

Beginning the race, participants received a key that corresponded to a lock placed in the lawn near Durfee Conservatory, across from Wilder Hall.

However, many seasoned participants were unprepared for the time and patience needed for the first clue.

Contending with the darkness, participants had to locate a randomly placed lock that matched their corresponding key. Upon successful completion, participants would be given a clue bringing them to their next destination.

At Berkshire Dining Commons, participants had to eat two whole donuts off strings without using their hands.

Other challenges were more physically demanding. At the Recreation Center, groups shot hoops, did burpees and jumped rope.

At Draper Hall, participants engaged with UMass EMS and took a crash course on techniques EMT-Bs use in the field.

Other pit stops included the Fine Arts Center, Student Legal Services Office, and University Health Services -- each presenting their own, unique challenges.

At the Fine Arts Center, students dashed around the exhibits to complete a worksheet.
At the Integrated Sciences Building, participants caught ping pong balls thrown off the 3rd floor balcony.
At University Health Services, participants had the challenge of placing a tennis ball on top of a Coca Cola bottle.

The night concluded with participants gathering in Wilder Hall for a wings, pizza and refreshments. The top three teams were awarded with gift certificates.
