St Hugh's Highlights Summer 2022

Welcome to the 2022 Summer Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities.

News and Events

We held both our Pre Prep and Prep School Elocution Competition. It was wonderful to once again be able to hold this event, after two years without a final to which all pupils and parents could be invited.

We held a Dedication Service in honour of former pupil and Battle of Britain Spitfire Pilot, Charles Nevil Overton DFC, 609 Squadron.

It was lovely to welcome Charles’ family and special guests to join us to commemorate his life.

Everyone enjoyed the flypast by a Battle of Britain Spitfire.

The whole school came together for a fun-filled afternoon to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Topics and Trips

Our Year 5 pupils had a fabulous week in France.

Everyone was extremely excited to finally have the opportunity to experience a school trip abroad once again.

Children in our Early Years Department arrived at school ready with their beach bags, buckets and spades ready for a day at Huttoft.

Chestnut Class visited the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight as part of their topic on superheroes.

They made excellent superheroes for their dress up day...

...and enjoyed meeting and hearing about the lives of real superheroes.

Year 1 travelled to Skegness Aquarium as part of their topic work on Oceans.

They also turned from classmates to shipmates for the day!

Year 2 enjoyed a day at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park as part of their Endangered Animals topic.

They transformed themselves into animals and wildlife rangers for their dress up day.

Year 3 became Vikings for the day as part of a Viking Workshop.

Year 4 became chocolatiers for a day - linked to their work on the Ancient Maya...

...and took part in a live Q&A session with Dr Diane Davies – the only British archaeologist studying the Ancient Maya as well as a very special online chat with Dr James D Nations (Keagan's Grandad!) who they discovered is a ecological anthropologist who once lived with Lacandón Maya families.

Both Year 4 and Year 6 had a brilliant adventure at Wild Pines Park - challenging themselves and screaming down the zip wires!

Year 5 travelled to Mr & Mrs Scott's farm as part of their farming topic.

Year 6 visited Lincoln Castle as part of their topic work and also as an investigation into local historical buildings.

Year 6 also visited the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Headquarters.

After raising money for the charity as part of our school Jubilee Celebrations, pupils were keen to find out more about their work and how donations help to save lives.

Our Year 7 pupils travelled to the Leicester Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and gained a fantastic insight into Judaism.

Year 8 visited The National Holocaust Centre and Museum, and took time to reflect on history in the memorial gardens.

Art and Design

The Years 7 & 8 Fashion Show showcased the pupils work which they had been busy working on in their art and design lessons.

Forest School

Everyone has enjoyed time in our beautiful woodland.

There has been a variety of activities from foraging and cooking to woodwork and pond dipping.

Making bhajis.
Getting creative.
Painting and glazing clay.
Foraging for ingredients to make pesto.
Getting comfortable while grid drawing.
Discovering the woodland's occupants.
Completed marble runs.
A sunny day for a spot of pond dipping.
Making clay insects.
Year 3 made amulets as part of their topic on the Vikings.

ISEB Project Qualification (iPQ)

This is the first year pupils have completed an iPQ.

The ISEB Project Qualification (iPQ) provides a framework for teaching and assessing the development of independent, pupil-led project-learning skills, taking the form of a 15-20 hour project.

Pupils in Year 7 chose a range of topics to explore.

Congratulations are well deserved as all pupils achieved a Merit, and Dan and Poppy were awarded Distinctions.

Music and Drama

The Junior Play, Rock Bottom, appealed to everyone's sense of humour with some fabulous jokes to entertain the audience!

Our Rock Band joined us on our stand at the Lincolnshire Show and were a real crowd-puller.

The Summer Concert brought together all our musicians and showcased the enormous talent we have in school.

With such stunning and emotional performances, we don't think there was a dry eye in the house!

STEM

The Year 7 Science Week was a great success.

Pupils chose a variety of topics to investigate - from comparing battery and gas powered guns to analysing bacteria samples in water and researching what shape ball is the best to kick.

Pupils travelled to Oakham for the Years 6 & 7 Parent and Child STEM Challenge.

Congratulations to Elliot for winning the competition! He is now the proud owner of a 3D printer...

...while Megan won a 3D pen.

Sport

Our U11 Girls' Swim Team performed brilliantly, winning Bronze at the IAPS National Finals and competing in the Olympic pool at the London Aquatics Centre.

Following their success in London, it was a trip to Ponds Forge to compete in the English Schools’ National Swimming Finals. Ailsa, Annabelle, Charlotte and Peyton were selected to compete, coming 7th Nationally in Freestyle and 12th Nationally in the Medley.

While in our own pool, we hosted our Years 1 and 2 Swim Gala.

Nursery, Pre-School and Reception parents were invited in to watch their child swim and find out what they do in their swimming lessons.

In Cricket, our U12 Boys got to the semi final of the County Cup.

We enjoyed a great range of Fixtures with every pupil in the prep school representing the school in ability graded mixed teams...

...and pupils enjoyed the lovely summer afternoons while watching their teammates out on the pitch!

In Athletics, we attended the National Prep Schools' Athletics (Years 6-8) and the UEA Athletics (Years 4-5) competitions.

Elliot and Florence qualified for the NPSA Finals, achieving national standards.

Both Florence and Elliot peformed superbly in the Finals!

Florence qualified for the 1500m, having ran an impressive personal best in qualifying in Doncaster. The final saw seventeen athletes battling it out over the 1500m with Florence very much holding her own. She ran another personal best which put her in a creditable 6th place overall.
In the discus, Elliot threw consistently and finished in an impressive 4th place from a field of seventeen competitors. He then went on to finish 5th overall in the Javelin event, despite battling a strong headwind.

Well done Florence and Elliot!

We took part in the Lincolnshire Schools' County Golf Championships...

...and had fun in our very own St Hugh's Golf Challenge.

It was great to see some of our pupils representing the school in a tennis fixture against Ranby.

Congratulations to Harry H and Freya B who won the St Hugh's Intra School Tennis Championship.

Our Year 8 pupils put their leadership skills into action, delivering a Sports Session for Pre Prep. This was the final assessment for the Young Leaders Award that we run as part of the PE curriculum.

It was fantastic to see the return of spectators to our Annual Sports Day.

It was a great atmosphere with our youngest pupils in nursery to our eldest pupils in Year 8 competing.

Congratulations must go to Beth C as the recipient of the Victrix Ludorum trophy...
...and Thomas B as recipient of the Victor Ludorum trophy.
Florence L broke the Intermediate Girls 800m record, held since 2012, and challenged both the Long Jump and 100m records!

Team competitions were as competitive as ever with all three sets challenging for the Set trophy. This year, it was White Set who were victorious.

Boarding House

Alongside the regular programme of activities, our Boarders enjoyed...

A trip to the Bowling alley - which seemed to bring out everyone's competitive side...

A fun evening of bouncing around at Jump Inc...

A welcome outing to the beach after a very hot day at school...

With a new edition to the village proving a hit for an evening treat!

Goodbyes and Good Luck

As the term comes to a close we must also say our Goodbyes and wish those leaving the St Hugh's family Good Luck on their new adventures.

Our Year 6 pupils had a lovely evening coming together to say goodbye to those friends who are leaving.

We will sorely miss you and your families and we wish you well for the future.

To our Year 8 Leavers, we hope you have enjoyed your final few weeks with us.

We hope memories of your trip to Ullswater, your team day at Back 2 Bear, the sailing trip, and laughter at Laser Tag will stay with you forever.

The Year 8 Leavers' Cricket Match with parents was a wonderful afternoon to mark your final few days here with us.

To Nancy and James, our Resident Assistants...

You have simply been amazing! Good luck as you embark on your University studies.

To Miss Hainsworth, Mr Ferguson and Ela...

Thank you for everything you have done - the Boarding House won't be the same without you.

We hope you enjoy your maternity leave, Miss Hainsworth, and look forward to meeting the new addition to your family.

To Mr and Mrs Sinnott...

Thank you for everything you have done for St Hugh's. Your enthusiasm and love for the school has shown no bounds.

You have played a huge part in the lives of so many children and we all wish you well in your new school!

Speech Day

This year it was joyous to finish the school year by coming together for Speech Day.

Our leaving Head Boy and Head Girl, Ruby S and Harry H, delivered excellent final speeches.

Thank you to Henry Price, Headmaster at Oakham, for an entertaining speech, complete with props, that both children and parents could very much relate to.

We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating the achievements of all our pupils from the very youngest to our Year 8 Leavers...

Performances from our musicians complemented the morning perfectly.
