Hatchet Chapter 9
Days passed. Brian found some Days passed. Brian found some turtle eggs. Though they tasted strange, he knew he needed the food. He didn’t even cook them, he ate them raw. After eating three or four, he stored the rest of the eggs under the dirt in his shelter.
With his new strength he built a spear with his hatchet. Cutting a tree limb and carving it, so it had a point. Still, catching fish was too difficult. He went back to his shelter, and there was a skunk in there, eating his eggs. “Get out of here!” Brian yelled. He picked up some dirt and threw it at the skunk. The skunk raised his tail and sprayed Brian, searing his skin. The skunk sprayed him into his eyes, causing him great pain.
Brian couldn’t see for hours, the pain lasted days, his eyes bothered him for week, and he smelled like skunk for over a month. He was skinny now, and his skin was brown, not white. Forty-two days after the crash, he heard the sound of a plane. He quickly moved the fire, so the plane would see the smoke. The plane circled around and around, but then left. His plan hadn’t worked.
Brian cried at first, and then went to the top of the cliff. With his hatchet, he tried to cut himself, to end it all. Brian wanted to die. But after the hatchet hit his skin, he stopped. Something in him changed. He was a new Brian. The old Brian died.
Since the spear didn’t work, Brian made a bow and arrow with his hatchet. He used a tree branch, very bendable, and one of his shoelaces, cut in half. At first he had problems using it, but after some practice he had no problems shooting the birds that dumbly stood around. “Fool birds,” he called them. Each time he’d cook and eat them, he’d chew the meat very slowly, trying to get all the taste..
