History

In 1872, Alpheus Branch founded "Branch and Company" with Thomas Jefferson Hadley. The two private bankers started the banking institution to provide security for the community and to help rebuild small businesses following the Civil War. In the late 1800s the newly named "Branch and Company, Bankers" grew until 1902, when the company was sold to "Branch Banking & Company". In 1913 the name changed to what it is today - "Branch Banking & Trust Company", reflecting the bank's active engagement in trust activities.

Since its start, BB&T has grown to become one of the largest banks in the southeast United States. Recently, the bank has focused on diversifying products and services for its customers, the most noteworthy change being "U", a new mobile application. The company is also looking to expand geographically, focusing on areas in Florida and Texas.
