The Rabbit-Proof Fence

The rabbit proof fence is a fence in Western Australia. It runs along the whole state.

Constructed between 1901 and 1907, the 1st rabbit proof fence was the longest fence of its time.

There were 3 separate fences built.

It cost $250/km to build and spanned 3,256 km, costing a total of around $850,000.

Mardujara

These girls are from the Mardujara tribe, in Western Australia.

Mardujara has at least 12 native languages, spoken by the different groups within the tribe.

Jigalong

Jigalong is a remote town of 427 people (as of 2011), of which 76.1% of the people are Aboriginal.

The rations storage for the workers building the rabbit proof fence was here.

In the 1930's, Jigalong was used as a camel breeding site.

Moore River

Along the Moore river, white men set up a 're-education' camp for 'half caste' Aboriginal children.

They believed that if the half white Aboriginals were married to white people and had children, the Aboriginal blood would eventually dissipate. They didn't want a 3rd race roaming Australia.
