The renovation project includes preliminary plans for a new eight-lane track and related facilities, an infill turf field, lights, seating and a press box, which will be completed prior to the first football game in 2017.
The second phase of the project will include an 8,600 square-foot support building that will house two locker rooms, training and equipment rooms, and public restrooms. Phase-two is expected to be complete in fall 2018.
The project will allow the renovated facility to become the home field for the football, men’s lacrosse, and outdoor track and field teams. The facility has also been designed for potential use by Bowdoin's women’s lacrosse team, the soccer teams, as well as numerous club and intramural programs. The renovation will directly impact the experience of more than 350 varsity athletes and more than 150 club and intramural sports participants.
"Whittier Field has been an amazing, but somewhat hidden venue for the track program for over a hundred years. I'm so pleased that more campus programming will be able to share this wonderful field surrounded by beautiful pine trees and the impressive architecture of Hubbard Grandstand." - Track & Field Head Coach Peter Slovenski
"This project will allow our student-athletes to prepare and train in a first-rate facility while also serving as an outstanding new playing venue for the men's lacrosse program. It will also create an atmosphere that will be a fantastic gameday experience for our parents, alumni and fans." - Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Jason Archbell
“We are extremely grateful to our generous donors, especially to our lead donor, who has stepped up in an exceptional way. Their gifts and those yet to come will provide the upgrades necessary to allow us to compete like never before. We’ll be able to serve a huge number of students at every level—intramural, club, and intercollegiate—and improve the spectator experience for all.” - President Clayton Rose
