Modern country is something I have absolutely zero awareness of, so this is a new one for me. While I'm not overly fond of the song itself, the lyrics are fun. This has some parallels with the incredible Warehouse One song we did back in March, "Victimless Crime Spree." It's not quite as intense when it comes to the subject matter, but the spirit is certainly the same: Live how you want to live, not how others expect you to. I think that's fine. I might recommend against certain courses of action if you seek my advice, but the moral agency is always yours. No talk of the cops here, no talk of the state, or politicians. It's just a song about finding yourself through experimentation, or perhaps repeated iteration. It's something we run into all the time with people on both sides of the ususal political spectrum. I might fall more on the conservative side of things, but I have issues with Republicans because they want to involve the state to enforce their views. I don't want to ban same-sex marriages, but I have issues with Democrats because I don't want the state to be the one approving marriage contracts or defining what marriage is and isn't. Same old story, again and again.

This cute little country number has one of the most easily understood libertarian ideal: self determination. Each individual have the right to live their life as they see fit, as long as they don't transgress on the rights of others. Such a simple concept, yet throughout time immemorial there have always been those who want to make others do what they feel is best. Today is no different. Even though most people view our times as so enlightened, there is still the idea that government telling people what to do and how to live is necessary to the advancement of society. Oh when will we learn! Each person leading the life they choose in the manner that suits them: revolutionary! I encourage you to live your best life regardless of the barriers put up by The State or anyone else. Like Casey says in the song, “Say what you feel / Love who you love /'Cause you just get / So many trips 'round the sun / Yeah, you only / Only live once.”

I feel like this shouldn't require saying but perhaps it should be Follow Your Arrow Unless It Aggresses Against Someone Else. There is an interesting conversation I've been hearing around lately about what libertarianism tells you about how to live. Some say it doesn't tell you what you can and cant do but that's inacurate. I'll give it to Dave Smith he rightfully points out the error in this thinking by pointing out that all of libertarianism is telling you what not to do which is violently aggress against others. Everything else is fair game. I think we forget this sometimes because it seems so damn obvious but maybe some people need reminded. So go on and follow your arrow, as long as it doesn't aggress against others.
