World Book Day

World Book Day – Thursday 3rd March 2022

This year to celebrate World Book Day’s 25th anniversary we are focusing on the book ‘10 Delicious Teachers’ written by Ross Montgomery and illustrated by Sarah Warburton. We would like children to dress as either a monster or a teacher in theme with the book. However, this does not have to be an elaborate costume. Children could simply dress in a colour and use face paints, stick googly eyes on their clothes or create a monster head from a cereal box. Please ensure monster costumes are age appropriate.

There will be various activities throughout the day linked to our whole-school book and we would like to incorporate the theme of recycling too. So, if possible, please start collecting items your child could use to create a junk model monster and send in with your child on World Book Day. We will be creating monsters in groups, so children do not need too many items. Items could be plastic bottles, cereal boxes, or kitchen roll tubes.

F1 and Beehive

In F1 and the Beehive we have had a lovely couple of weeks. The children have been learning about Chinese New Year and had a wonderful time food tasting. They watched the story about why the Chinese celebrate and they made red envelopes for good luck.

In F1 during their Jigsaw session the children have been thinking about what jobs they would like to do in the future. They came up with some wonderful ideas. One child wanted to be a helicopter pilot another a builder and one child even wanted to be a dinosaur!

The Beehive have started their new story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and are looking at nouns and repeated refrains. They are loving their new story.

F2

The children in Foundation 2 have been scientists this week and have been learning all about the human body. We have been labelling our bodies, writing labels on sticky notes. We have been finding out about ways to keep healthy and have also been finding out about our skeletons and the different bones in our bodies. Did you know your foot has over 50 bones in it?

In maths we have been learning about shapes and describing the properties of flat 2D shapes and solid 3D shapes. We played a Kim’s game and had to work out which shape was missing when one was taken away.

In Talk for Writing we are developing our writing skills and are becoming much more confident with using a capital letter at the start of a sentence, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end.

We really enjoyed having a mystery reader visit last week. We enjoyed it when Betsy’s mum read 'Tiddler' to us. We would love to have more mystery readers, if anyone’s parents, grandparents or grown ups would like to visit and read us a story please talk to Miss Childe and Ms Dervey so we can make this happen.

Year 1

Year 1 have been working extremely hard over the past week. We have written new stories in T4W, based on our text, 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. Ask your child to retell our story about 'The Three Grey Donkeys' for you.

We really enjoyed working with each other in science, where we labelled the human body and thought about our senses.

In RE we have continued to explore Judaism and looked at Shabbat and why it is important to Jewish people.

In art we have loved creating our own human figures in the style of Keith Haring, using pictures of ourselves in different poses as starting points.

Next week we are looking forward to geography, where we will be finding out facts about our county. In history we will be reflecting on all our learning, that we have done over the past two half terms, about the history of Hull.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 the children have started a new addition and subtraction unit in maths looking at different methods to work out calculations.

The children have enjoyed recreating their own model image of 'Best Buddies' created by Keith Haring. The children then posed for the camera and created their own picture of themselves using their pose.

Next week, we will be innovating the story of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff.' We are looking forward to hearing your children's fantastic ideas. In R.E, we will be comparing Christianity and Judaism, looking at the places of worship, artefacts and food.

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to read as part of National Storytelling Week, the children thoroughly enjoyed this. The children were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite book to contribute towards the James Reckitt Children's Picture Book Awards 2022.

Hair donation

We are really proud of one of our Year 3 pupils - Sophia - who donated her hair to the Little Princess Trusto make wigs for children and young adults living with cancer. What an amazing act of kindness!

So far she has raised £312 for this worthy cause. If you would like to donate, please contact the school office who can put you in touch with the family.

Well done, Sophia!

A plea...

As part of our nurture provision (Launch Pad) and therapy offer, we often use lego for Play Therapy. If any families have any lego they no longer want, we would be grateful for donations. We also use small card games (eg Top Trumps), so please send these our way if they are no longer used!

Thank you

The Launchpad

The Launchpad is our nurture provision, run by the wonderful Mrs Riley. This half term the children have been exploring what we need to grow friendships. They have also worked on managing their feelings and recognising different emotions, producing some mood plates to reflect this work.

Spotlight on RE... A recent visitor

This week, Years 3 and 4 had a very exciting and interesting morning when we welcomed Imam Abid Salik to our school. Years 3 and 4 study Christianity and Islam in their RE lessons, so it was a real pleasure to welcome the Imam, who works in a local mosque, to our school. The children had many interesting questions prepared for him, and were fascinated to hear about his mosque, Islamic festivals, food and clothes. After the morning, the Imam commented on how much he had enjoyed working with our children, their excellent questions and their outstanding manners.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3/4 have had a very exciting fortnight. Last Thursday, we had our Geography Curriculum Day about Globalisation which involved looking at migration. The children particularly enjoyed debating this issue and producing their own leaflets.

We also had a visit from the local Imam linked with our R.E curriculum. The children were praised for asking intelligent, philosophical questions. Ask your child about some of the interesting facts we learned.

Our current Maths topic is money and the children have explored using coins to make different equivalent amounts. In T4W we are moving onto our independent write (Hot write) where the children will use their imaginations to create their own instructions.

Year 5

So far this half term in Y5 we have really enjoyed our Talk for Writing unit and are very much looking forward to completing the hot write based on our suspense story of 'The Key'. There has been some amazing and creative writing shown so far.

Maths has seen us focus on geometry including symmetry and translation; we have really enjoyed this different element of maths and learning about coordinates and how this can be applied in the real world.

In history we have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons and in particular, Alfred the Great! We loved learning how he defeated the Vikings and was the most powerful king of the seven kingdoms. In addition, he was famous for translating many books from Latin to English.

Finally, our Salvador Dali pictures have been amazing and learning how to do our own lithography has been excellent. The results have had us amazed and it's been nice to learn about Salvador's 'eccentric' life too.

Year 6

Y6 have enjoyed a busy few weeks at school. In our writing lessons, all teachers were impressed with a recent task, in which the children had to describe a setting. We were very pleased with how pupils have started to include amazing descriptive language such as similes, metaphors, and personification. All work showed real progress.

Our Talk For Reading text, 'Rooftoppers', is being enjoyed by all and we have loved getting to analyse new characters.

In maths lessons, pupils have worked very hard on our geometry unit which involved studying angles, 2D shapes and 3D shapes.

Our history topic of WW2 has gripped the students, and we have had some wonderful contributions and discussions.

In science, our topic is life cycles and we have been fascinated by the life cycles of mammals, birds and insects and how they are different. Children were especially intrigued by the unique life cycle of a platypus!

The focus in RE has been how different religions develop rules; we have studied this in Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism.

As always, we value your continued support. Y6 team

Internet Safety

Tuesday 8th February saw Wold engage with Safer Internet Day, which helps to raise awareness of online safety and 'netiquette' for young people.

Teachers and pupils sat down for some fascinating discussions about respect online, how to protect our personal information and what is appropriate content for our age.

If there has been anything raised by your child about online safety, or if you have any concerns that you would like to discuss, please contact the school and we will be happy to talk.
