The Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators (FAME) and the Department of Medical Education recently hosted its ninth annual Medical Education Day, a full-day dedicated to examining and advancing the future of medical education, and celebrating outstanding teaching and scholarship. The day included a series of workshops, innovative didactic lectures, discussions, a keynote by Martin Pusic, MD, PhD, FRCP(C), director in the Division of Learning Analytics for the Institute for Innovation in Medical Education and associate professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine, and an awards ceremony celebrating excellent educators at Feinberg.

Morning sessions included a faculty development workshop, a discussion on physician burnout and wellness, a review of frameworks, cognitive and engagement strategies, interprofessional case-based applications and interventions to guide medical education, and more.

Quentin Youmans, MD, Linda Suleiman, MD, Adesuwa Akhetuamhen, MD, and medical students, Mateus Lima and Ramael Ohiomoba, led a workshop exploring the unique challenges underrepresented minority trainees face during the transition from medical school to residency and discussed how senior peer mentorship can effectively mitigate these challenges.

Speaker Martin Pusic, MD, PhD, FRCP(C), delivered his keynote address on "learning analytics" and its application in cognitive simulation for health professions education.

"You and I as educators need to use our imaginations because we can do so much more than what we could do before," said Pusic.

In an afternoon session led by Katherine Watson, JD, and Swati Deshmukh, MD, participants practiced their "medical improv" skills — an application of improvisational theater principles and training techniques in medicine used to improve physician communication, cognition and teamwork skills.

Patricia Garcia, MD, MPH, David Salzman, MD, MEd, and Kristy Wolniak, MD, PhD, demonstrated how the new technologically-enabled and acoustically optimized Active Learning Classroom (ALC) can be used in active learning pedagogy.

Participants brainstorm how the active learning space might be useful in enhancing learning outcomes for students.

During the closing awards reception, Walter Eppich, MD, PhD, director of FAME, presented the winners of the John X. Thomas, Jr. Best Teachers of Feinberg Award and FAME Excellence in Teaching Award.
