The Canadian Cosmetic Cluster has developed a fast-track program to help bring innovation to your brand. The Cluster has only one goal and that is to increase your knowledge to help you accelerate your business for the Canadian Cosmetic Market. Combine knowledge with action to grow your understanding of cosmetic business, cosmetic formulation, ingredient knowledge and marketing.
This accelerated program was developed for individuals looking to fast-track their business brand but who lack experience in the fast-paced cosmetic industry. We will work with you to provide you with an essential plan to succeed. At the end you can present your innovation during one of our innovations days where you can showcase to various industry members. We can also put it online in the digital innovation section of the Cluster website to share with the international network.
Week 1 - Cosmetic Industry Foundations
Introduction to the Cosmetic Industry (2 Hours): This is a general overview of the cosmetic industry. We will talk about the industry across the supply chain from raw materials, contract manufacturing to services. This will be the foundation of the project
History of Cosmetics (2 Hours): The history of cosmetics spans at least 285,000 years ago and is a part of almost every society on earth. From Ochre use by the early humans to the ancient Rome baths that are still preserved today. We look at the evolutionary, biological and sociological aspects of the history of beauty.
Product Development (2 Hours): Product development starts now! We will go over the stages of cosmetic product development. From the laboratory and to the ingredients that can implement into the product for maximum benefit and efficacy. We look at the best ways a small business can develop cosmetic products and gain access to resources that will not break your budget. We will review cosmetic formulas for their ingredients and look at new type of product ideas.
Work Session Part 1 (2 Hours): Work sessions are conducted at the end of every month to help students advance. We will also go over some case studies. Case studies provide an inside view of how others have succeeded or failed. It is important to study the footsteps of others to keep up in the industry race.

Week 2 - Cosmetic Product Development
Digital Strategies (2 Hours): We will discuss about how cosmetics can be paired with AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) and XR (Mixed Reality) which falls under the category of immersive technology for digital strategy success.
Raw Materials Innovations (2 Hours): Raw materials are the building blocks of all cosmetic products. The principal raw materials used for manufacturing cosmetics are oily materials such as oils, fats, wax esters, and ester oils, and surface-active agents are used as emulsifiers, solubilizing agents. The water-soluble ingredients are often humectants or actives.
Packaging Innovations (2 Hours): Cosmetic packaging is used for cosmetic containers and secondary packaging of fragrances and cosmetic products. Packaging can be bottles, jars, boxes and palettes. We will go overview of the different packaging types for skin care and colour cosmetics and their advantages. Sustainable packaging will be discussed in detail.

Week 3 - Going Global in Cosmetics
Cosmetic Business 101 (2 Hours): We will focus on the operation of small cosmetic business operations, project management and strategic mapping. All these concepts help in improving business growth. You will also learn about the Cosmetic supply chain, new tech apps and communication methods.
Cosmetic Business Writing (2 Hours): Writing well is one of the most important skills you can develop to be successful in the business. The cosmetic industry is no different. This course will go over different types of business writing that you will encounter in your cosmetic career. This course will introduce business plan writing and you will begin your business plan. A solid Business Plan is the most important part of any business. Do not think even think about making product samples without a solid plan. A plan should also include financial information such as loans, debt and investments.
Cosmetic Marketing in 2023 (2 Hours): There are no shortcuts to reach the top! There are many established and new cosmetic brands in any given market. A new cosmetic entrepreneur has to deal with a lot of competition and survive in tough market conditions. This course will go over what is needed for your cosmetic brand to not only tackle the competition but also to become a leader in your product niche. Great content isn't a luxury, it's a necessity! The content you post on social media has the power to turn your brand into a household name and turn your followers into lifelong fans. The best way to stand out on social media is to identify specific goals, create valuable posts that align with those goals, and distribute content on the right platforms.

Week 4 - Succeeding in the Market
Global Cosmetic Markets (2 Hours): The global cosmetics market size was valued at $380.2 billion in 2019, and is projected to reach $463.5 billion by 2027, registering a CAGR of 5.3% from 2021 to 2027. We will go over the global market. We will focus on the key points to enter various markets, mainly focusing on Europe, UK, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, China and Japan
Cosmetic Retail Opportunities (2 Hours): The Canadian Cosmetic market is worth 15 Billion USD. Canada is a country full of potential for the cosmetic industry. We will discuss purchasing habits of consumers and various retail opportunities.
Cosmetic Branding (2 Hours): Branding, by definition, is a marketing practice in which a company creates a name, symbol or design that is easily identifiable as belonging to the company. This helps to identify a cosmetic product and distinguish it from other products on the market. Branding is important because it what makes a lasting impression on consumers. It also allows your customers and clients to connect with the message your company stands for and the lifestyle it is associated with.
