In the first few chapters, we get introduced to Amir and Hassan, two boys who are friends. Amir talks about how he and Hassan used to "climb the poplar trees in the driveway of my father's house and annoy our neighbors by reflecting sunlight into their homes with a shard of mirror" (pg.3) telling us that they did everything together. Amir and Hassan enjoyed kite running which they did a lot before the Taliban came into power. Amir's life started out fine until he witnessed something happening to hassan. Amir just stood there and didn't do anything to help Hassan. Amir's life changed, he would never forget that he "watched Hassan get raped" (pg.86) and he let it happen. The first few chapters have already shown us what Amir has been through during his early childhood, but things are about to change for Amir.
Later in the novel we see Amir and Baba move to Fremont, California where everything changed for Amir. Amir attended college to major in creative writing and became very successful after writing his first novel about two afghan boys. Life was good for Amir and Baba until Baba was diagnosed with Cancer which Baba refused treatment for. Amir was still ashamed about not helping Hassan in the alley and now he has to deal with the fact that he is about to lose Baba. Before Baba dies, he wants to throw Amir a big wedding before he dies. Baba spends "$35,000" on Amir's wedding which could've been used on a house for Amir and Soraya but they appreciate the wedding. Soon after the wedding, Baba passes away and Amir is left with Soraya for comfort. Amir's life has taken a toll for the worst with the loss of Baba but his life turned around while he was in America, his life changed but guilt still stuck with him and it was about to come back and haunt him again.
Towards the end of the novel we see Amir go back to Afghanistan to meet up with Rahim Khan who has some very important news to tell Amir. Rahim Khan tells Amir that he has to save Hassan's son Sorab who has been captured by the Taliban. Amir goes and looks for Sorab and unveils stuff from his past. He finds out that Assef is working for the Taliban and remembers how afraid he was of Assef and how he would never face him. Amir finally stands up to his enemies and gets back at Assef and saves Sorab from the Taliban.
