ON THE GREEN WITH BRUCE
We are seeing some warmer weather and are looking forward to a full green up by the first part of April. The period from January through February had some very cold temperatures again this year and allowed areas of Bermuda grass that were not overseeded to go into complete dormancy. You probably noticed the fairways play firm and fast when dormant! This year all greens and tees were overseeded. The seed came in nicely and has provided great surfaces to play on. As it warms up, we’ll begin to transition out the cool season grass on the greens and tees. We accomplish that by lightly vertical mowing the greens to thin out the grass and allow the underlying Tif Dwarf Bermuda to get more sunlight and heat to out compete the cool season grass. Additionally, we’ll do light applications of fertilizer to stimulate growth. This is usually a seamless transition that players don’t even notice.
Over the winter when we are not mowing fairways, tees, approaches, and roughs as frequently, we monitor sand depths in bunkers and add sand as necessary to maintain a depth of 4” on the floor and 2” on the face. It’s been almost six years since we did a bunker renovation and installed a gravel and polymer liner to facilitate excellent drainage after a heavy rain event and to maintain clean sand to play from. The liners are still performing well.
The golf course maintenance staff begins work extremely early in the morning. We want all areas of play prepared and ready for the first tee time or an 8:00 am shotgun start. As always, we appreciate your support by playing The Quarry and we want you to have a fantastic experience. Thank you from the maintenance team.
