Have a Wonderful Winter Break!

It has been quite a year so far! Thanks to all our families for allowing us to spend time with your children. We are lucky to have families who support our school and an amazing PTO that supports our students, families and staff. It has been so great to see all the students out in the snow. It's like this huge new toy fell from the sky and there was enough for every single kid! They're working together to build things, getting creative, laughing and busy the entire recess. I hope you have just the break you need - quiet and peaceful or all out winter fun. Enjoy!

FOOD DRIVE ENDS TOMORROW!

We need 1,000 more pounds by 10 am to reach our goal!

  • Non-perishable foods only (canned, boxed or bagged food).
  • Drop off in the morning at the front or back of the school.
  • Our goal is 2,300 pounds.
  • The Elks Lodge will deliver over 200 baskets of food to families from La Pine to Madras. Additionally, baskets will go to seniors and families of those in the military.

Lost and Found Will Be Out Front Wed - Fri This Week

Anything not "found" will be donated over the winter break.

Important Dates

  • December 7 - 15: 12th Annual Miller Food Drive

School Weather Delays and Closures

  • When the weather and roads are bad, the school buses may be running late. If there is a closure or a late start, information will be announced through the following communication methods, no later than 5:30 a.m.
  • School schedule changes and emergency plans will be posted as soon as possible on the Bend-La Pine website at www.bend.k12.or.us.
  • Messages will also be recorded on the dedicated snow line at 541-323-SNOW (541-323-7669). For Spanish, call 541-355-0044.

  • Local area radio and television stations will announce the current status. Plans will be updated if conditions change.
  • Please note that no announcement means normal operation.

Cold Weather is Here!

  • Students should wear or bring a coat, hat and gloves on cold days.
  • We go outside for recess if it is 20 degrees or warmer.
  • We also allow students to play in the snow as long as they have snow boots, snow pants and a snow jacket.
  • PLEASE PUT YOUR CHILD'S NAME ON ALL CLOTHING! We will get missing items back to students when we find a name on them.
  • If you could use some help getting winter wear for your child, please contact our FAN advocate, Heidi Odman by calling 541-355-5682 or texting 541-728-2084.

Winter Holiday Vacations

It is best for students to be in class every day! However, if you are planning to miss school days for an extended vacation, please let us know so we can enter the information into our attendance program. It really helps to know ahead of time. Thank you.

Picking Up Your Child Early?

No need to let us know ahead of time. Please just call the office when you are on your way to pick up your child and we will ask the teacher to send your child to the office. You will need to come into the office to sign your child out. Thanks for your help with this.

If You Are Reporting a Sick Child

To help with illness tracking in our school, please include your child's symptoms when reporting the absence.

TREX Plastic Recycling

Please help us recycle the plastics we use instead of putting them in the landfill after a single use. Look for the big white bins out front. This will go on all year.

BOOK FAIR SUMMARY

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this year's book fair successful! The final sales count from the Book Fair was $11,758 which earned $5,364 in Scholastic Dollars for Miller. We are donating $600 Scholastic Dollars to Bear Creek Elementary School. What a great way to share the gift of reading!

Play for a Cause on Wednesday, January 19th, between 1:00pm-6:00pm at Mountain Air located at 20495 Murray Rd, Suite 150 in Bend. Mountain Air will donate $5 of every jump pass purchased for jumps on this day and during this time only to the Miller PTO! Mention Miller Elementary during purchase either day of in-person or online in the comment box for jumps on this day and during this time window only.
Family Access Network has a list of items you can purchase and donate to help families in our community get ready for winter. Please look at this flyer for items on their Winter Wish List. You can even purchase directly from their Amazon Wish List through the link in the flyer.
At the Dec. 8th PTO General Membership Meeting, Miller staff provided updates on school programs. Principal Jen Healy covered the idea for an outdoor classroom on the primary side of school, explained additional roles teachers have taken on in different disciplines, and outlined school safety drills. Mara Richardson (1st Grade Teacher) described the Green Team at Miller, and Stephanie Rodgers (4th Grade Teacher) highlighted the Random Acts of Kindness (RAKtivists) group's work. PTO Board members provided updates on programs and fundraising. The Bylaw Changes were postponed until the next General Membership meeting due to time constraints and lack of attendance. Stay tuned for next General Membership meeting date! You can read the meeting minutes here.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to support Miller Green Team and Random Acts of Kindness groups. They primarily need help with t-shirt printing/ordering, but they may need help with some other items as well. Please email Mara Richardson about Green Team support and Stephanie Rodgers to support the RAKtivists.
