Class 7 Summer 1 2022/23

Literacy

Linking to our topic, we have been writing a narrative piece based on 'The Saga of Biorn' (a video about a Viking battling a giant). We learnt what features are used in a narrative and practiced these skills before applying them into our big write. The skills we explored are:

  • Speech (using correct punctuation)
  • Expanded noun phrases to add detailed description
  • Fronted adverbials to open our sentence in varied ways
  • Writing in the past tense
  • Using similes / metaphors

LIRA

This half term, we finished our work on 'The Firework Maker's Daughter' and then moved on to 'Viking Voyages', a non-fiction to support our study of Viking life.

We explored how Viking's lived their everyday life, the different types of warriors Vikings could be and how they traveled the oceans and raided monasteries. We worked really hard on our reader response skills and tried to put ourselves in the shoes of a Viking to see how they would feel living at that time.

Maths

In class 7's maths class, we have looked at Place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and fractions. We are still working hard on our arithmetic and times tables.

Topic

Our topic has really excited us this half term! We have been exploring 'Raiders and Invaders' where we looked at the struggle between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons.

We explored...

  • What Anglo-Saxons and Vikings believed in
  • Placing events into timelines
  • Why Anglo-Saxons and Vikings came to Britain
  • How Vikings crossed the North Sea and why/how they raided monasteries
  • The accuracy of sources
  • Who King Alfred was and the impact he had on Viking invasions
  • How the vikings were defeated

For our outcome, we created a Kahoot quiz to test Class 6 and Class 8 on their Viking knowledge. We tried to make it as difficult as possible!

Science

We have explored sound this half term in our weekly science lessons. We explored how sound is made through vibrations and how these vibrations change based on the pitch and volume of the sound. We also conducted studies about which materials absorb sound the best.

RSHE

Our focus in RSHE has been 'Living in the Wider World'. We have looked into the difference between rules and laws and the consequences of not following these. We have also explored our local community, looking closely at different groups and democracy. Then, we went onto looking at positives and negatives of the internet and how information is shared and used online.

Things to celebrate

Attendance

We had lots of children who had 97% + from our previous term. Amazing work!

Walk to school week

Mapplewell took part in Walk to School Week. We had lots of children gain their certificates for walking to/from school every single day. Well done!

Celebration certificates

Our children have been superstars this half term, and so many have been home with a certificate to recognise that. Well done you!

Reading Nook Winner

This half term, children took part in a 'book nook' competition to express their love/passion for a particular book they had read. See our winner below for a brilliant home made board game of his book choice.

HCAT Rockstars day

We had a brilliant day for our HCAT Rockstars Going for gold day. We all looked amazing! And we tried our very hardest on TTRS all day!

Looking forward to Summer 2.....

Enjoy the half term break!
