Top 5 Christmas Movies By: Alle Cesare & Gabby Angelo

As the holiday season approaches everyone's favorite Christmas flicks air on tv again. While there's a variety of options to watch all over, here are the top 5 must-see Christmas movies, including personal favorites, that you can't miss out on this season. Hand-selected and evaluated, these movies have the most spirit, humor and best cast each uniquely worth watching.

1. “Elf” (2003): Christmas Elf ‘Buddy’ leaves his home in the north pole in search of his biological family, his journey though traveling to NYC is shared through his perspective of the confusing city life. Buddy struggles to fit in with his family but as the movie progresses his true joy and Christmas spirit ends up saving the day. With the many short comments, quick jokes, and awkward situations viewers find amusement in the many funny scenes. Buddy the elf, is oblivious to real world life and problems forcing the viewer to laugh at him desperately trying to figure out simple life. The childish yet hilarious scenarios shed light on the Christmas joy throughout the movie which is shown everywhere. Characters in the movie gather and sing Christmas carols together, decorate for Christmas and show their anticipation and excitement for the holiday frequently. All of the characters' excitement and preparation for Christmas almost makes the viewer get excited as well. This movie truly brings humor and Christmas spirit to life.

2. “Home Alone” (1990): A favorite of many, was written and produced by John Hughes. It is a very entertaining and humorous film including hilarious characters that make it 10 times better. It is based on a kid named Kevin McCallister, who was acting badly one night before going on vacation then the next morning he woke up to an empty house, his family left and forgot about him. During his time home alone he realizes that two men are trying to rob him, so he decides he needs to protect the house. This is where the humor comes in because him setting up traps and messing with these guys is hilarious to see their frustration and confusion. Between pulling pranks and actually physically hurting these people there is comedy throughout and it definitely ties the Christmas theme. Whether it is the Christmas lights, snow, winter hats & coats they are always referencing the holiday spirit and wintertime. This really makes it a lot of fun for the whole family to watch, this is for all different kinds of audiences.

3. “A Christmas Story” (1983): “A Christmas Story” written by Jean Shepherd, came out and was a hit ever since then. It is definitely one of my favorite Christmas movies and is on a lot of people’s top list. It is not only a Christmas movie but it is a Christmas comedy. The main character Ralphie, has some obstacles he has to get through around Christmas time. There is just one thing he wants for Christmas, while thinking about dealing with his interesting family members and so many other things on his mind. His father barely pays any attention to him, he is normally in a cranky mood always complaining but his mother is always there for him making him feel better which helps him. He also has to deal with his bully, Scut, always there trying to make his life miserable. The way he deals with all of the things going on around him can be very entertaining and funny seeing how he is going to make it to Christmas in one piece.

4. “The Grinch” (2000): The cinematic take on Dr. Suess’ “The Grinch” shares the story of how a creature who hates Christmas is shown true holiday joy thanks to young girl Cindy Lou Who. The Grinch is a great movie for a few reasons: It's extremely Christmas spirited, has a great theme behind it, and is very different from generic movies. As the viewer is taken through Whoville, the Christmas decorated town is eye-catching and encapsulating. Everything is Christmas-themed from the little restaurants to all of the homes, the Christmas spirit is everywhere you look in this movie. Secondly, this movie expresses acceptance of all creatures despite their reputation. The humans accepted the Grinch into their lives regardless of the fact that he is a green furry creature that tried to ruin Christmas. Lastly, the movie is something totally different from any other Christmas movie. It's not a traditional holiday romance or Christmas day narration. It's a story of spreading joy and coming back from your mistakes told through the eyes of a child who sees even the worst of things as pure. This movie is a great Christmas spirited film that encourages love and acceptance for all.

5. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989): “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” a 1980’s Christmas Comedy is easily one of my favorite Christmas movies. Different from many holiday movies this one is a hilarious take on a family Christmas, highlighting the reality of spending Christmas with distant relatives. The outgoing and extremely enthusiastic family dad Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, drags his family through all sorts of extensive and crazy Christmas activities to try and host the best family Christmas with his relatives. This movie is relatable to real life in so many ways and leaves the cheesy Christmas romance stories in the dust. Any age can draw some connection to their real life from this movie so it truly is for everyone. The Christmas spirit also shines in this movie as the whole thing is circled around having a perfect Christmas. All of the settings are decorated for Christmas including all of the homes and stores. And while the family isn't perfect the viewer can feel the true Christmas spirit and family connection right through the screen. With many other surprises, the Griswold Christmas is hilarious, unpredictable and for all ages.
