The poem describes the barrier that one's skin color can have on life. As the speaker grew older he became more aware of the discrimination he would face because of his skin and how it served as a wall separating him from reaching his dreams. However, the ending of the poem consists of the speaker's call to action and introduces a new tone of optimism and hope.
