Lord of the Flies- Jack's Symbolism Andrea wlson

One theme that Jack represents is arrogance and pride.

"'I ought to be chief' said Jack with simple arrogance, 'because I'm chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.'" (28)

This shows that Jack is used to being in charge and getting his way. Jack's arrogance was built on this, and it tends to show in his words and actions.

Furthermore, Jack represents savagery in many ways.

"Kill the beast. Cut her throat. Spill her blood." (104)

The quote is being chanted during the killing of the boar in a hunt lead by Jack. It shows Jack's cruelty towards the pig when brutally murdering it, giving him an air of savagery.

Jack also represents and shows rebellion in many parts of the book.

"'He's not a hunter. He'd never gotten us meat. He isn't a prefect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing." (126)

In the quote, Jack is speaking out against Ralph during an assembly. This shows Jack's competitiveness towards Ralph and his longing to be in charge, which causes him to rebel.
