From the Board of Trustees:

Leila Govi ’93 Appointed President

Dr. Austin and the Academy’s Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the appointment of Leila Govi ’93 as the Board’s incoming President, effective July 1. Ms. Govi is the first woman and first alumna to serve in this role; she will succeed Brian Simmons P ’12, ’14 H ’22, who so admirably and actively supported Deerfield through the pandemic.

Ms. Govi joined the Board in 2014 and has served as Vice President since 2019. She is a senior partner at Egerton Capital, a London-based investment firm that was founded in 1994 and manages over $20 billion in assets globally. Ms. Govi joined the firm in 2004 and manages various investment holdings for the fund. Prior to joining Egerton, she worked for seven years at JP Morgan as a telecoms analyst.

A pioneer at the Academy—Ms. Govi was one of the first “Deerfield Girls” to attend after the school’s return to coeducation in 1989—she graduated from Georgetown University in 1997 with a BA in Economics. After residing in London for more than 23 years, Ms. Govi now lives in New York City with her husband and two children, Sofia and Tommy.

The Deerfield Experience:

Summer Edition

After two seasons of virtual programming, we are excited to see everybody in person once again! Our Summer programs—The Experimentory, the Deerfield Academy Summer Arts Camp, and KIPP-STEP—offer young students a chance to learn and express themselves while having a whole lot of fun on campus.

Summer Grants

Deerfield students are making an impact all over the world this summer through our Center for Service and Global Citizenship (CSGC)!

One student, Will ’23, is part of a student-run "keep our island clean" program on the Caribbean island of Barbuda. His efforts to promote sea turtle conservation are another example of the responsible citizenship the Academy instills in students.

Opening this Fall:

Simmons Dorm

Simmons Dorm is on schedule to open this Fall—just in time for the start of the new school year. Students living in this new space will enjoy the beautiful accommodations, including a courtyard garden. Simmons Dorm was thoughtfully built with additional lockers for day students, and will replace the temporary modular housing units located behind the village quad.

Simple Tax-smart Planning

You know it’s smart to save for retirement with an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), but do you realize that most of us (and our spouses) will not exhaust our IRA accounts during our lifetimes?

Some percentage of the assets will ultimately pass to our designated beneficiaries. In most cases, each beneficiary must withdraw all of their inherited IRA assets within 10 years, regardless of their age. The heir will pay income tax on the assets, at their own income tax rate.

Consider rearranging your plans so that tax-burdened IRA assets go to your favorite charities, and other appreciated assets go to your family.

Non-profits are not taxed on received IRA assets, and thus can realize the full purchasing power of the money you so carefully saved. Changing beneficiaries is easy—just contact the company that manages your IRA to obtain the appropriate form.

If you include Deerfield as a beneficiary, please let us know! Far too often, financial managers do not notify charities that they have been left IRA assets. Knowing your intention in advance will enable Deerfield to make appropriate inquiries after your death and to ensure your bequest is put to the charitable purposes you intended. For more information about beneficiary designations and other ways to leave a legacy at Deerfield follow the link below.
