Tamarack Larix larcina

Mélèze in French

Also known as American Larch

Medium size tree

Needles and cones

Adapts well where winters are long and cold

Root system is shallow and taproots rare

Needles turn yellow in the fall, then drop when the weather gets colder

Prefers full sun and intolerant of full shade

Tamarack bark

In my garden, rescued when small and struggling in a dry field and replanted next to a mature specimen near a spring creek.

Now both are thriving in our Canadian zone 4b mountain ecosystem.
