Digital Literacy enhanced with two new technology initiatives

In September, Board of Trustees approved two large technology initiatives so Butler students can thrive in digital economy.

Butler is the first in Kansas and only the 50th institution in the world to be designated an Adobe Creative Campus. Coming soon every Butler student, faculty and staff member will have access to more than 60 individual software platforms. It gives students access to technology many would not otherwise have, and it expands access to personal devices from anywhere in the world. Exposure to and experience with these programs will enhance the workforce for the Wichita/metro area as well as south central Kansas

MyButler Laptop, another technology access initiative for students enrolled in at least nine credit hours. Three thousand brand-new Lenovo laptops have been ordered and for a $150 registration fee, students may enter the laptop program. The laptop becomes their personal device. Butler doesn’t want it back. In partnership with Ribbit Computers in Wichita, an extended three-year service agreement comes with the laptop at no additional charge. Students must remain enrolled in three semesters in order to avoid a laptop program termination fee.

Dr. Tom Nevill becomes VP of Academics

Tom Nevill, DMA, officially began his duties as Butler Community College’s Vice President of Academics July 1. His arrival and previous experience with Adobe was instrumental in Butler becoming the first community college in Kansas to be designated an Adobe Creative Campus.

Nevill obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastern Illinois University, and both his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Guerrero brings enthusiasm for education to Butler

Dr. Julio Guerrero joined the Butler Community College family as the new Dean of Health, Education and Public Services on August 9. His goal is to ensure students and families know how to access higher education regardless of their economic status.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics & Biology from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and a Master of Science in Exercise Science from Oklahoma State University.

He also completed his doctorate in philosophy in Health Education from Texas A&M. He joined Butler from Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio, Texas, where he was the Kinesiology Program Chair.

Butler Community College and Johnson County Community College (JCCC) leadership have partnered to elevate the training for Butler’s Culinary Arts students and allows Johnson County to extend their culinary program’s American Culinary Federation (ACF) accreditation to more Kansas students. JCCC’s Chef Apprenticeship program was the first to be accredited by the ACF Educational Institute in 1979 and is now available to Butler Culinary students through Wichita/metro restaurants. It remains the largest in the country and is the only ACF accredited program in Kansas.

Grizzly athletics in full swing and competing at high level

After a tough 18-months of COVID-19 and moving all season to last Spring, Butler athletics are back to their normal fall seasons and off to a hot start. The Butler volleyball team is currently sitting atop the conference at 6-0 and are ranked nationally at No. 7 with their 20-2 overall record. Twice the Grizzlies have had National Players of the Week recognized, Carly Clennan (El Dorado, KS) and Kayli Duncan (Wichita, KS). The Grizzlies defeated the defending NJCAA National Champs from a season ago and beat Seward, a team they had not won against since 2014. Butler’s two losses came early in the season, and both were to a NJCAA top-10 team.

Butler soccer, after a competitive pre-season schedule that featured four top-10 teams, is on a six-game winning streak and undefeated in KJCCC play. They are currently ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA National Poll. Butler has outscored their conference opponents 40-2 over the course of the last six games and are on pace for another KJCCC championship. This team features three players from Butler County and another 16 players from the state of Kansas. The Grizzlies are winning at a high level and using local talent to do so.

Butler football is 2-1 with wins over defending National Champions Hutchinson and Dodge City. Their lone loss came week one to No. 2-ranked Independence who sit atop the KJCCC at 3-0. One of the Grizzlies standouts this season is sophomore wide receiver from Lawrence, KS Darius Lassiter. Lassiter leads the NJCAA in receiving touchdowns this year with seven and is third in yards per game at 107.

The Butler Cross Country teams are two meets into this season and working toward the Region VI and National meet coming up in late October. The teams train all season long to be at their best come the championship meets at the end of the season. El Dorado High grad Garin Knight is on the men’s team while the women’s team features five of their seven runners from Kansas, two from Wichita, two Mulvane and one from Hugoton.
