Woodcrest Second Graders Explore PLTW-Properties of Matter

The second graders in Ms. Staley's and Ms. Waltz's class became "Young Inventors." Using the Engineering Design Process in our PLTW (Properties of Matter), students collaborated to put together their own "coolers" to keep the "Ice Pops" frozen for the duration of one hour. The students worked very hard in their collaborative teams with their supplies of bubble wrap, egg cartons, cardboard, paper, aluminum foil, tape, etc. It was a great hands-on experience to encourage students to develop the knowledge and skills they need to thrive and succeed. The students had a great time sharing and explaining the process they used to create their "coolers"!

February is National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month! Did you know that Midland Public Schools offers many different CTE programs that prepare students for various high-demand, high-wage careers?

This week, we highlight the Construction Trades Program

MPS courses offered in Construction Trades:

  • Woodworking
  • Introduction to Trades
  • Building Trades

Featured Students:

Grayson Moore, Junior, and Lindsey Campbell, Senior; MHS

When asked how the Construction Trades program has made an impact on their education, Grayson and Lindsey responded:

“Building trades really opens you up to thinking about what you might want to do. So if you do want to go into some building after high school, building trades would probably be the best option. So, I was thinking electrical, but this opened me up to all the other trades that are on the table.”- Grayson Moore

“I really like it because I get to do a lot of hands-on work, and that’s just my favorite thing in the entire world. Just building things, and it’s what I always done since I was really little. I really like this program because I get to do a lot, and I get to learn a lot about houses.” - Lindsey Campbell

Thanks, Grayson and Lindsey, keep up the great work!

For more information about the Construction Trades program, contact instructor Kevin Dodick (dodickkr@midlandps.org) or your assigned high school counselor.

Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Congratulations, Zoey!

Dow High wins another SVL title in the pool

(Photo/story credit: Midland Daily News) Dow High boys’ swimming and diving team continued its dominance of the Saginaw Valley League on Saturday, beating out second-place Grand Blanc and eight other teams to win its fourth consecutive SVL championship at Saginaw Valley State University. The Chargers finished with 1,068.5 points to Grand Blanc’s 848.5. Dow has won the Valley championship in 19 of the past 20 years. Only Grand Blanc, who won the SVL in 2019, has interrupted the Chargers’ run from 2004 through the present. Dow coach Claire Fries, who was named SVL Coach of the Year, said that Saturday’s meet was “all-around successful” for everyone involved. Dow will send 10/potentially 11 athletes to the Division 2 state final in Holland on March 10-11. The Chargers have already qualified to compete in 10 different events at the state finals. Way to go Chargers and good luck!
