Hiatal Hernia Stephen Taft

A condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle.

Hiatal hernias can have no symptoms. In some cases, they may be associated with heartburn and abdominal discomfort. Also you may have pain in your chest, and sometimes a sore throat.

Hiatal hernias may not require any treatment. Some are treated with drugs and a few types need surgical repair. In some cases the person that was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia might come across sever and rapid weight loss.

A hiatal hernia can be diagnosed with a specialized X-ray study that allows visualization of the esophagus and stomach (barium swallow) or with endoscopy (a test that allows the doctor to view the hernia directly).

The exact cause of many hiatal hernias isn't known. In some people, injury or other damage may weaken muscle tissue. This makes it possible for your stomach to push through your diaphragm. Another cause is putting too much pressure (repeatedly) on the muscles around your stomach.
