In chapter 8 Ian went to civics class and they were talking about Lester Pearson, Mrs. Watkins told the class that he was a peacekeeper. She then asked the class If anyone knew someone that have surved in the military. Ian hesitated then said that he did. Mrs. Watkins suggested if anyone wanted to get their grade up then they could interview someone that has been a part of the military. Ian knew she was talking about him. At the beginning of class Mrs. Watkins asked if Ian Could speak about his placement and when he did his classmates were surprisingly rude.
In chapter 9 Ian when back to the soup kitchen in hope to find sarge and ask him a few questions about his time in the military. Luckily for Ian he shows up and Ian was able to talk to him. Ian found out that sarge had been a peacekeeper and he also got lots more information. Sarge questioned Ian about if he knew anything about what happened in Rwanda, Ian confused replys no, the chapter ended with sarge leaving the kitchen upset and unable to speak.
In chapter 10 Ian goes home curious about why sarge was so upset about him not knowing what happened in Rwanda. Once Ian researches about it he finds out the sarge was a peacekeeper in Rwanda where thousands were killed.
In chapter 11 Ian skips school to go find sarge at the park when Ian finds him Ian asks him more about Rwanda and how he was so shocked that it happened. Ian then asked if sarge wanted to eat breakfast with him at a donut shop near by when they get there sarge takes Ian back to the dumpster where he finds their breakfast even though Ian offered to pay for their breakfast. On their way back sarge talked about how he strongly believes in heaven because of all the bad things he's seen in the past.
