Philosophy Club

Founder: Keita Maekawa

What is your club's mission?

"[We want to] promote critical thinking, active listening and discussing skills."

What was your inspiration for starting the club?

"My experience during the pandemic. I realized the importance of human connection and talking with people, and I think people can learn a lot from having conversations."

What are some examples of topics that have been discussed in Philosophy Club?

"One topic we've discussed so far was the Ship of Theseus. It's a thought experiment about identity where there's a ship and over time it gets damaged and bruised. It needs a repair, right? The question is, over time, if every part of the ship is replaced, is it still the same ship after?"

Shogi Club

"Shogi is similar to chess, but the main difference is that you can use the pieces that you take from your opponent. These differences give a new aspect to Shogi in comparison to chess."

"This club provides an alternative to chess, and it is something interesting that people can try out."

What inspired you to start the club?

"I used to play Shogi with my grandfather, and I was determined to beat him every time we played. Cultivating this competitive spirit drives my passion for Shogi."

Financial literacy club

Founders: Kevin Ren and Harry Guan

“Financial literacy is Being able to judge, budget and view your expenses. These are tools you must utilize on a daily basis as an adult. Financial literacy is how people manage their money while also managing their time, because time is money.”

What got you passionate about financial literacy?

"We were shocked to find that many people were confused about basic finance concepts. This lack of knowledge could be fixed through some basic education, which motivated us to start this club."

What is your club's goal?

“To teach people how to be financially literate with a wide variety of skills such as stocks, taxes and even cryptocurrency.”

Why is financial literacy important?

“School does not teach financial literacy, but we think it is a very important skill for people to have, since we are going to be dealing with money for our entire lives. We thought it was our duty to spread that information at HHS and teach people the art of financial literacy.”

adopt a soldier

Founder: Rushil Jayant

What is your club's mission?

"I want to show the human side of soldiers so that people deeply understand the sacrifices they make and can express their appreciation."

What activities do you have planned for your club?

"I plan to give students the tools to make a difference in soldiers’ lives, specifically through writing letters, book drives and making posters. My goal is to reciprocate the support soldiers have given us."

Why did you start the club?

“I started this club in middle school because I grew up in Texas before I came to California. There were a lot of service members who inspired me. I have heard many stories of how they have served our country, and that inspired me to give back.
