Why is "_" harming me?
A visual book series dedicated which will help invite a refreshing perspective about autism.
Why am I here...?
...asks a young Kris as he grows up in a world unsuitable for neurodivergent people, especially those who are autistic. Diagnosed as a toddler with “high-functioning” autism, Kris would eventually relocate from a special education to a standardized one. This gradual change would leave him room to question all that he was taught, how other autistic people are raised, and what it truly means to live as an autistic adult.
The Problem
Life is hard for an autistic adult when society is constructed to be unforgiving to those who fail to meet their strict expectations. It certainly does not help that resources and amenities for autistic people are gravely scarce as soon as they grow into adults. The reason for such inhospitality is due to a wide variety of myths and stereotypes that convinced people to view autism in a dehumanizing and infantilizing manner.
Our Solution
A problem like this requires a slow and delicate pace to ensure that our messages will leave a stronger impact with our audience. Instead of tackling these harmful myths head-on, this book series will instead leave enough room for the audience to consider inviting an entirely different perspective about autism. This approach prevents readers from feeling pressured to reconsider how they view autism, while still connecting to them in an effective manner.
Why Is _ Harming Me?
A visual book series that is designed to welcome a new and refreshing perspective about autism. Through a unique balance of illustrations and text, this series will provide a story that can be both comprehensive and impactful for both autistic and non-autistic people. Readers will follow the paths of Ash and Luna as they come face-to-face with the struggles of their social lives, how they learn to respect their own boundaries, and also persuade their families and peers to treat them with the same understanding and respect as any other person.
Ash (He/Him)
Ash is a cautious autistic feline who is the protagonist of "Why is Fitting In Harming Me?". In this story, he finds himself in a tough situation: Will he set off on his own path in order to pursue in what makes him happy, or will he attempt to blend in with his peers for a sense of belonging? Would he have to face loneliness in order to be himself?
Luna (She/her)
Luna is a nonverbal autistic feline, and the protagonist of "Why Is Being Social Harming Me?". As a passionate artist, she speaks through her artwork rather than with words. Since she doesn’t speak with words like her family and friends, her messages are often ignored or muddled down. Take a trip with Luna as she learns how to put her foot down and deliver a strong message that no one can ignore.
