PATH TO THE MLB

29 Former Cavaliers have reached the Major Leagues since Brian O'Connor arrived in 2004.

Under Brian O'Connor, 12 Cavaliers have been selected in the first round including Pavin Smith (7th overall) and Adam Haseley (8th overall) in the 2017 MLB Draft

Virginia was represented in the World Series each year from 2016-2020.

  • 15 former Cavaliers appeared in an MLB game in 2021, the most in the ACC and tied for the most of any Power-5 school
  • Since 2019, 14 former players made their MLB debuts, the most of any college baseball program

ATHLETIC TRAINER

  • 20th season at Virginia
  • Works exclusively year-round with Virginia Baseball program
  • Responsible for the overall daily health care of UVa student-athletes, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation for injuries and illnesses
  • Served as USA Baseball National Team Athletic Trainer and was part of the 2008 Gold Medal Team
  • Recognized by the National Athletic Trainers Association as a Clinical Scholar Champion

RANDY BIRD

SPORTS NUTRITION

  • Consults with the baseball coaching staff and student-athletes to provide direction and communicate the value of nutrition programs specifically designed to promote their health and performance
  • Works with the a Certified Executive Chef to develop menus for the training table and organize cooking demonstrations and grocery store visits for baseball players to help them make better food choices.

ED NORDENSCHILD

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

  • Head Strength Coach for all Olympic Sports at UVA
  • Provides year-round comprehensive, baseball-specific training programs for each member of the team
  • Each program focuses on many components including: strength, aerobic and anaerobic endurance, flexibility, coordination, speed, agility and power.
  • Works closely with nutrition and sports medicine staff to develop the individual strength and conditioning programs

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY

  • UVA athletics has two full-time licensed sport psychologists "in-house"
  • Only four of its kind in the nation and sets the standard for other Division-I schools.

UVA was one of 30 D1 Baseball programs to achieve a 100% Graduation Success Rate for incoming student-athletes from 2009-12.

The baseball program has a dedicated academic coordinator that conducts weekly meetings with student-athletes.

TEAM IMPACT

In 2018 The Cavaliers partnered with Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit headquartered in Boston, Mass. that connects children facing serious or chronic illnesses with college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes
