READY FREDDIE
In the Wolfpack’s first meeting with UConn in 2003, linebacker Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay - now NC State’s nickels coach - had the game of a lifetime, scoring two of the team’s touchdowns.
In 2003, Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers’ senior campaign, the Huskies came to Carter-Finley Stadium on Oct. 11. It was UConn’s second season playing in Division IA and the year before they joined the Big East.
Although the Pack had entered the season ranked in the top 20, the game went down to the wire. After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams went into halftime tied at 10. In the third quarter, Aughtry-Lindsay returned a fumble 48 yards for a score. The Pack jumped up 14 points later in the third when Rivers hit the tight end for a 25-yard scoring strike.
UConn came roaring back in the fourth quarter with two TD strikes to tie the game at 24-24. The Huskies got the ball back with 47 seconds left in the game and drove from the 14 to the 42, when Aughtry-Lindsay intercepted a pass and ran it back 56 yards for the winning score.
home, sweet home
Carter-Finley Stadium has always been known as a difficult place to play, but that reputation has really been solidified over the past two seasons. And with back-to-back sold-out games, #WPN is solidifying its reputation as the team's 12th man.
NC State enters the UConn game with a 12-game winning streak at Carter-Finley Stadium. That’s the fifth-best active home winning streak in the FBS and is the second-longest in the history of Carter-Finley Stadium (which opened in 1966).
NC State posted a 7-0 mark in games played in Carter-Finley in 2021 and has not lost a home game since Nov. 6, 2020. The 2021 Wolfpack was the first squad since 1986 (35 years!) to go undefeated at home (and that squad did post one tie) and one of just six teams in school history (1967, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1986) to post an unblemished record at Carter-Finley Stadium.
During the 12-game streak, the Wolfpack has outscored its opponent 34.3-15.3 (412-184) at home.
defensive dominance
NC State enters game 4 with the ACC’s stingiest defense in terms of points allowed. The Wolfpack has given up just 12.3 ppg in the first quarter of the season, a mark that ranks 16th in the FBS.
aydan't it great?
Although cornerback Aydan White started two games last season, he wasn’t exactly a household name among the Wolfpack faithful. That is, he wasn’t until the Texas Tech game.
White had a massive game for the Wolfpack in that victory, earning Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors, as he became the first NC State corner to record a pair of INTs in the same game since Jack Tocho did so against Syracuse in 2014.
In the first quarter, with the Red Raiders driving, he intercepted his third career pass and raced 84 yards for a score. That marked the seventh-longest interception return in school history and the longest since 2001. In the fourth quarter, he picked off his fourth career pass.
White also tallied five total tackles, including a huge eight-yard sack. He enters the UConn game tied for first in the ACC and fifth in the FBS in interceptions with two.
For his efforts, White was named the Walter Camp FBS Defensive Player of the Week and the ACC Defensive Back of the Week.
receiving line
Quarterback Devin Leary is definitely spreading the ball around this season. Seventeen different players have caught passes for the Wolfpack this season (Leary himself actually caught a touchdown pass in the win over Texas Tech, but the play was called back due to a penalty).
No other ACC team has completed passes to that many receivers this season (Miami and Syracuse each have 16 different players with receptions).
Even more impressive, out of the Wolfpack's seven touchdown passes in 2022, all seven have gone to a different player.
touchdown (pass), thomas!
Not only does Thayer Thomas catch touchdowns, he also throws them.
When the fifth-year grad student hit running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye for a 38 yard score in the win over Texas Tech, it marked the fourth touchdown pass of his career.
Thomas has thrown a dozen passes in his career, and although he’s only completed six, that completion to touchdown ratio is pretty strong.
He threw for two TDs in 2019, one in ‘20 and then last week. In total, he’s passed for 199 yards.
