Term 4 2021 Newsletter WA Secondary School of The Year 2018

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and School Supporters

It has been fantastic to see our students enjoying the many activities that staff have provided for them over this term. Activities have encompassed academic, social, sporting and cultural events and it is wonderful to see the way that students have so enthusiastically embraced the opportunities available to them. I would like to make mention of just a few.

Firstly, the inaugural Celebrate Lynwood Day organised and hosted by our amazing Student Council. This day provided a feast of activities for students to celebrate the multicultural, diverse student population we have at Lynwood. Whilst this is reported on elsewhere in this newsletter, I cannot acknowledge strongly enough the fantastic inclusive behaviour of our students. I was very proud of their efforts and the quality of the event that they produced.

I would like to commend Soccer Specialist Tony Campbell for his inclusive work in coordinating the Education Support South Network (ESSN) Soccer Carnival. Tony worked with a couple of coordinators within the network to support the program for 8 schools. Wirrabirra Education Support Centre Principal Julie Dawson stated that: “The day was well organised and seamlessly run by Tony and the team he led. The students who were given the task of being either a referee or team leader were fabulous with our students and used good skills with our students, all of which have some form of disability. As you can imagine no easy task. I’m sure Tony had put in a tremendous amount of effort in preparation for them to have the skill and understanding needed when working with our students – this was definitely evident on the day. So, in light of all of this I wanted to thank you for allowing Tony, as part of his Phys Ed role within your school, to run this event and allocate the time to enable this event to happen. It is one of the highlights on our calendar for our students and we sincerely appreciate the time and effort that goes into organising and planning such days, particularly the effort and input from Tony. Well done to Tony Campbell on hosting such a special and worthy initiative.

During Term 4, the tender process was conducted for our new building program. We are currently waiting to see who the builder will be and are excited to see the commencement of this project sometime in January 2022. There will be a little bit of inconvenience at times as we negotiate the various aspects of the building process and we will keep our community informed as it progresses.

Please note that all parents / carers and visitors to the school must report to the main reception located at the front of the school. This is particularly important as we have relocated some of the school services due to the building program. Once visitors have reported to the reception area, someone will meet them to bring them to the relevant area of the school. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.

During term 4, our school underwent the Public-School review process. This review is generally conducted every three years by an external panel and is an extremely rigorous process. You are welcome to read the Public-School Review Report which is now located on our school website.

I will be on leave for the duration of Term 1 next year and Associate Principal Kelly Summers will be acting as Principal in my absence. Mr Roneil Billimoria will step in as Acting Deputy Principal and Mr Anthony Tran will act as Head of Maths for Term 1.

I wish all students and their families a relaxing school break, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and I look forward to working with our community next year.

EaLS

EaLS - UWA Race Around Campus

On the 16th of November Year 9 students from Pathway 1 Math and EaLS classes went on an excursion to UWA for the Race Around Campus event, organized by Aspire UWA. They participated in activities around campus designed for them to get an idea of what tertiary studies they may be interested in. It was lovely to see that the Aspire staff who were showing us around were ex-Lynwood and EaLS student YiQing Low and past student Ahmed Shalan.

EaLS Presentation Evening

On the evening of the 7th of December students, parents and special guests joined in celebrating the success of students in the program at the 2021 EaLS Presentation night at Kim Beazley Lecture Theatre. The EaLS students presented a summary of their year’s work. A certificate commemorating the students’ hard work was given out, and a special award honouring academic excellence and commitment to both sustainability and peer support was recognised through the Citizenship Awards. A key highlight of the event was being able to hear from 2015 Lynwood SHS Graduate Treasure Agenson, who delivered an inspiring KeyNote speech. Treasure is a past EaLS student and has now completed an undergraduate Bachelor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences and Finances degree, with Honours in Population Health. Treasure is also in the last year of a Medical degree.

A special thankyou to the Lynwood staff who assisted on the night, and to parents and guests who came out to help us celebrate the achievements of EaLS students. Enjoy the remainder of the year and have a safe and relaxing break.

Lower School Managers Report

As we come to the close of what has been a busy year, I think everyone is looking forward to a break and some much-needed rest. I have been really impressed with how the Year 7 and 8 students have performed this year (for the most part!). Prior to school reports being released I always remind the students to look at the comment before the grade. This is the part that tells them how they have conducted themselves in class, and how that effort has impacted their grade - positively or negatively. This is the point where goals can be set, not necessarily in regards to a career path, but more so in regards to who they want to be as a person and how they want to be viewed. Every positive on the report is something to be proud of!

Orientation Day was held at the end of November for incoming Year 7 students. It was a record turnout with nearly all enrolled students attending. Prior to Orientation Day, all Lynwood students were encouraged to nominate as a Peer Leader. There were over 60 applications, with 36 students being selected. All students participated in a full day of training the week before, with in-depth discussions on what makes a leader, how to solve problems and how to communicate effectively. Feedback from staff is that the Peer Leaders conducted themselves in an excellent manner and were able to work effectively as a team and with the students in their group. Well done and thank you to all of the Peer Leaders. Student leadership is valued at Lynwood and we encourage students to continue to apply for every opportunity to enhance their skills.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students for being the amazing people they are. But most importantly I would like to thank the parents and carers for their support throughout this year. Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday break. See you next year!

Natalie Narducci Lower School Manager

Year 7 Coordinator's Report

This term has been a great term for the Year 7s with it being the last term of the school year. Students have had a positive experience in their first year of school but are ready to take the next step into Year 8 and not be the youngest in the school!

This term gave the Year 7 students many opportunities to participate in different events both in outside of the school and outside the school. A standout day for the whole school was Lynwood Day which was driven by the wonderful student councillors who did an excellent job. The Year 7s had lots of fun on the oval and in the gym, and the food trucks were a big hit. A select group were also able to represent the school at the Interschool Athletics Carnival and showcased their talents in selected events, all involved participated to the best of their ability and represented Lynwood as best as they could. An outstanding effort this Term was from our Interschool Debating team that won the Year 7 Championship trophy after competing against other schools throughout the year. This was an exceptional effort from our Year 7s and they should be very proud of their achievement.

Lastly, the students with Good Standing had the opportunity to attend the End-of-Semester incentive excursion at Outback Splash during Week 10. This was an incredible day with the weather being perfect and the students behaved tremendously. The day involved lots of water slides, attempting mazes, playing mini golf, eating lots of food, and enjoying time with their friends. In all it was a fun day!

Congratulation to all students that received awards at the Lower School Awards Assembly. I hope everyone enjoys their extended holidays, I look forward to seeing our Year 7s as Year 8s!

Mr Pottinger, Year 7 Coordinator

Year 8 Coordinator's Report

What an incredible semester we have all had! It has been an honour being your Year Coordinator this year (and many more to come!) with an amazing group of students. We have had many opportunities students have participated in and it has been a pleasure to watch everyone thrive and grow.

TAG Everyday Leader Program - Character Strengths

Our Year 8 TAG classes have been actively engaging in the new Everyday Leader Character Strengths program throughout this Semester, learning all about their own and their peers' individual strengths and how they relate and contribute to their lives and those around them. Well done to our students and our wonderful TAG teachers for their facilitation with this amazing program.

Miss Fernandez's TAG 805

Our Year 8 students have worked very hard this year and deserve to be rewarded for their great behaviour, academic achievement and for displaying kindness and maturity towards one another.

Adventure Zone Year 8 Incentive Incursion

The second year eight incentive incursion Adventure Zone was held at our school during Week 10 on 15 December where students were treated to an exciting array of obstacle courses, a nine metre double slide, a gladiator challenge, a dunk tank, an inflatable chill out zone, sausage sizzle and a fun pool session all held on site at our school!

Year 8 Science Excursion – Gravity Discovery Centre

We took an exciting journey to Gingin to visit the Gravity Discovery Centre organised by our wonderful Science Department. Students had the opportunity to see and learn about our amazing universe and even viewed the sun live through a massive telescope! We learnt about fossils, Earth, the solar system and climbed a huge tower to drop water balloons to test several theories of physics.

Well done to all the Year 8 students for a great end to the year and thank you to all of the wonderful Year 8 TAG Teachers for your amazing work! 😊

Wishing everyone a safe holiday break and looking forward to 2022.

Miss Mac Year 8 Coordinator

Year 9 Coordinator's Report

2021 began with a taste of lockdown that was thankfully short. Our school's Year 9s responded with community spirit. We stayed away when asked, wore our masks, cleaned our hands and distanced ourselves for the benefit of all.

After a mini lockdown the term began in earnest. Lynwood’s famed community spirit could be seen from the soccer pitch to the music room. Classrooms buzzed with the curiosity of young minds and the imparting of wisdom from dedicated educators. Lessons were conducted like symphonies, crescendos came in the form of successful assessments, deeper understanding and powerful performances.

The year flew by in a breathless blur of events. The sports carnival, swimming carnival, soccer tournaments, NAIDOC Week, The Arts Showcase, Arts Week, excursions to Bounce, Hoyts and Laser Tag, debates, the inaugural Lynwood Day, and that doesn’t even cover half of it! Throughout all of this our year group contributed, competed and upheld Lynwood’s values for all to see.

I know I speak on behalf of the official Year 9 Coordinator, Ms Bowden, and myself, when I say that it has been a pleasure to serve this wonderful group and watch you all develop over the course of the year. Next year will be defining for many of you and we wish you all the best on your journeys through school and life.

Mr Woroglian Year 9 Coordinator

Sustainability

Lynwood SHS has recently been recognised as a school that has reached the milestone of achieving 10 years as a Waste Wise accredited school. Yay for us! What a team effort!

We have been the recipient of two Waste Wise grants. The first grant was used to design and fabricate our Community Recycling Station (now located in Yew Place at the rear). We collect and recycle coffee pods and so far this year we have recycled 27,768 pods. We also collect dental care products, dish care products, batteries and mobile phones. The Community Recycling Station is managed by our EaLS students and since 2016 we have received $2584.68 for the products we have recycled.

The second Waste Wise grant will be used to build a chicken enclosure. The school generates a lot of food waste and chickens will turn this waste into eggs as well as producing manure which will be used in our LEAF Permaculture program. Food waste when sent to landfill creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Removing food waste, garden waste and paper from landfill is an imporat5nt step in climate change action.

Kathy Anketell, Sustainability Program Coordinator

IEC

Intensive English Centre Beach Excursion for Summer Safety

On Friday 3rd December, all IEC students and staff took to the surf at Leighton Beach, to become beach-aware before the summer holiday starts. The visit to Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club was arranged by partner organisation Centrecare, as part of their Life Skills workshop series about cross-cultural settlement skills. In many students' cultures, swimming is uncommon, and lots of students have never been to the beach before. Students learned in a 'theory' class about swimming safety, sun protection, finding rips and the role of surf life savers.

Fun in the Sun!!

After introductions to life savers both young and old and a reminder to always swim between the flags, students hit the surf with enthusiasm. Those who were more tentative were encouraged to gradually go in deeper by the laughter and fun being had by others. By the end of two hours, boys AND girls were playing confidently in the water and taking turns on rescue boards, either laying down or standing up (yes!!) surfing waves into the shore. Excellent attitudes and efforts by all!

Health & Physical Education

Term 4 is always a busy one on the HPE calendar. A special mention goes out to the Year 7s who wrapped up their first year of Health Education with some well-timed anti-smoking and vaping campaigns that reminded students of the dangers to their health. During the scorching summer days, they have also enjoyed the LSHS swimming pool in races and games.

A highlight of Term 4 would have to be the success of the students competing in the SSWA Interschool Athletics Carnival, finishing third overall. The competitors made the school and their families proud after competing in the searing heat. Special congratulations must go to the following students who achieved high individual honours for the day:

Runner Up Champion Boy – Maliq Chirimumimba

3rd Overall – Indiana Burton, Zahara Burton, Jazzmyn Blankendaal and James Vogels.

A special mention to Year 7 student Harry Gordon who competed in the recent State Athletics Championships.

Congratulations Harry Gordon

Also well done to all the Years 9, 10 and 11 Outdoor Education students who participated in camps and excursions during the term, putting into action all the skills they have learnt over the semester.

Ian Bycroft, Head of Health & Physical Education

English

Congratulations to the Year 7-10 Lynwood SHS Interschool Debating teams! They finished off the 2021 competition on a high in Week Three, when the final round was held at Fremantle College. Our Year 7s were crowned joint Champions with John Curtin, and our Year 8s achieved joint second place with Melville and Rossmoyne. This is a fantastic achievement! The Year 9s and 10s also worked hard throughout the competition to achieve wins in various rounds. Overall, Lynwood SHS achieved third place on the school leader board behind Harrisdale and John Curtin. We are so proud of all our teams for working together to be awarded third place in a competition involving eight schools. Let’s see if we can bring another trophy home next year!

In Week Six, we put together a display of all things ‘English’ for the Lynwood Day celebrations. This was a great opportunity for English staff to showcase some of the work we do in our Learning Area. We had visual displays of novels, films, and documentaries, as well as our debating teams achievements. We also engaged students in bookmark making and literary quiz activities.

It's been a very busy term of exams, assessments, reports, and planning for 2022. We are all looking forward to the holidays, and hope that our students, parents, and colleagues have a restful and safe break.

‘Happy Holidays’ from the English Team!

Science

The International Chemistry Quiz (ICQ)

The International Chemistry Quiz (ICQ) is a challenging competition run by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI). The quiz is a unique chemical education activity, designed to be interesting and to promote chemistry and chemical thinking. Questions go beyond what is covered in syllabus documents, and challenge even the most capable students.

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) was founded in 1917 as both the qualifying body in Australia for professional chemists and a learned society promoting the science and practice of chemistry. It has approximately 7000 members spread throughout Australia.

Every year RACI organises several state-based and national events, competitions and activities that provide educational opportunities for the next generation of chemists.

The ICQ is truly an international competition, attracting students throughout Australia and 20 other countries around the world. In 2021, the Quiz consisted of 30 multiple choice questions that were answered online in 60 minutes. This year 200 Lynwood Senior High School students participated across four age levels: Junior (Year 7 and 8), Intermediate (Year 9 and 10), Senior (Year 11), and Final (Year 12).

I would like to congratulate all participants on their efforts. Participation certificates will be handed out at year assemblies, and merit certificates will be awarded to the following students at the next awards assembly:

LEAF

Term 4 has been busy in LEAF! The Year 12 students went on their final reward excursion to the Epicurean restaurant at Crown, using money they had earnt through the sale of plants and crafts over their time in the LEAF program. It was a great day, and everyone left full to the brim.

Our Year 11 students have been busy in the garden this term on top of going on their Cape-to-Cape trek, and going out on Workplace Learning experiences.

The LEAF family have also just moved into their brand-new space and we are all excited to turn it into our new home!

Thank You to our Volunteers

Late in Term 4, close to Christmas, our volunteers and mentors finished the year with an End of Year/Christmas Morning Tea. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to thank them for the wonderful work they do working with our students and supporting our school. Unfortunately, being the busy time of the year that it is, not all could attend, but our heartfelt thanks still go out to every one of our volunteer team. Their invaluable contribution to our school makes a long-lasting impact on our students and staff and helps to make our school the outstanding educational facility that it is.

Mental Health and Well-Being in the Holidays

Dear Parents/Carers

As we approach the end of the year, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the importance of looking after ourselves as we take a break from regular routines.

The stresses and concerns we may face change from being school related to home and community based and these stresses can sometimes be heightened around Xmas time.

As parents and carers you know your children best. You are in a good position to monitor your children’s wellbeing and to recognise early signs that they may be experiencing difficulties. These signs can include changes in behaviour, mood or health, or your child may communicate (directly or indirectly) how they are feeling and thinking.

If you are concerned about your child over the holiday period, I encourage you to seek further advice and assistance. There are a range of external services available for young people and families while schools are closed. For some examples, please see the below links and attached resources which includes services that provide assessment, intervention, phone and web-based support. Your family GP may also be able to provide information/referrals to other services. For mental health support over the Christmas break please keep these contact details on hand. •
