Video Editing Basics with Premiere Pro

Thank you for joining us for this workshop! We highly recommend that you have Premiere Pro installed on your device before the workshop so that you can work along with us!

Pre-production TIPS

Organize your files

Consider organizing your files in a central location so they are easy to find! This also makes troubleshooting easier should something go wrong.

Consider external hard drives for video storage

If you want to edit lots of video, external drives are great!

External hard drives are a great solution for people who edit a lot of video. They keep from having to manage your computer's storage and it is way nicer to your computer.

Getting Started and importing Clips

Creating a project

To create a new Premiere Pro project, Click New Project from the start screen.

Be sure to title your project so that it is easy to find later!

Importing Footage

Use the Media Browser panel to locate and import your media files. To import media files, select them and right-click on them to choose Import.

To preview a video in the Source Monitor, double-click it.

This Media browser will allow to see and review any source footage or sequence you add to your project.

Selecting Clips and Adding them to the Timeline

You can select your clips and simply click and drag them to the timeline.

There are a number of ways to add footage, but clicking and dragging can be an easy solution

EDITING YOUR VIDEO

Now that we have covered opening a project and importing a clip, we can move on to the edit.

Video Playback

The spacebar can be used when the timeline is selected to play the selected sequence or source clip. You can navigate around the timeline quickly by clicking and dragging the vertical blue line in the Timeline panel called the playhead.

Moving Clips and Trimming Clips

Once in your timeline, clips can be moved by clicking and dragging them around.

Holding down Cmd(Mac)/Ctrl(Windows) while clicking and dragging a clip will allow you slide all other clips over as you are editing

Clips can be trimmed on the timeline by moving your cursor the the end of a clip and clicking and dragging when the selector turns into red brackets or yellow brackets.

Exporting and SHaring your Video

When you are ready to share your video with the world, sharing is easy with Quick Export!
  • Open the sequence you want to export. You can also select a sequence or media file in the Project panel for export.
  • Click the Quick Export icon.
  • Choose a File Name and Location for your exported file.
  • Choose a preset.
  • Click Export.

For further control when exporting, you can use the full export menu by going to File>Export>Media (Cmd(Mac)/Ctrl(Windows) + M)
