Falconer's Hill Academy Our children, their future, our responsibility

Principal's Message

Welcome back after a lovely half term break. Our first personal development visit to the Natural History Museum took place this week . The children and adults had an amazing time and generally agreed that it was worth the travel. The children should have been exhausted after all that walking. We are looking forward to the upcoming trips. This is the first year we have booked visits like this and the uptake has been great. You will receive an email if your child has a space on Hampton Court and V & A Museum soon.

Vice- Principal Message

On Wednesday 22nd February we had the first of our personal development visits. A group of children from Year 3-6 visited the Natural History Museum, London. This was a day full of awe and wonder from start to finish. When we arrived, the children were amazed by the size of the museum and the impressive architecture. There were so many fantastic exhibitions. When we entered the Hintze Hall (the largest public gallery in the museum) gasps could be heard and jaws definitely dropped when they realised the skeleton of a blue whale was suspended from the ceiling. This was wonderful to witness. The children enjoyed learning about Darwin, dinosaurs, mammals, creepy crawlies, volcanoes and earthquakes, gemstones and human evolution (to name just a few galleries). We even got to see a slice of a 1,300 year old giant sequoia tree which children from Sequoia class particularly enjoyed.

The Dot exhibition

Our cover today is by Joe in Year 5. He was inspired by the art work project led by Mrs Young. The children in worked on a book called The Dot and created some amazing work. The exhibition in the Gallery is almost complete.

Learning Round-up

Maple class have settled back in to school life amazingly. This week we started our new topic in talk for writing looking at an information text ‘from the encyclopedia of nasty creatures’, in history we started our new topic of Ancient Greece looking artifacts, in PE we have started to learn some new hockey skills. Amazing start to the new half term!

Silver Birch - Welcome back year 3! We’ve had an absolutely brilliant beginning to the new term. One of the highlights from this week was our new P.E topic - Hockey. Whilst many of the children were nervous to try this sport, everybody gave it a brilliant go and it was amazing to see the skill development during the lesson. Everybody was so focused during this lesson and really enjoyed learning these new skills. We have also enjoyed settling back into routines and have begun our non-fiction, report writing topic for Talk for Writing.

Pine class have settled back in well and thrown themselves into our new learning with enthusiasm. In History we are learning about the Byzantine Empire which followed the Romans. In maths we have been superb at our decimals and dividing by 10. This term we are looking at astronomy in Science and Talk for Reading, plus our Writing model text is about aliens. We are excited to immerse ourselves in space this term! In art we also loved looking at a painting and recording our responses through some abstract poetry which we performed to the class, see the results below!

Elder class have settled back in well and thrown themselves into our new learning with enthusiasm. This term we are looking at astronomy in Science and Talk for Reading, plus our Writing model text is about aliens. We are excited to immerse ourselves in space this term! In art we also loved looking at a painting and recording our responses through some abstract poetry which we performed to the class, see the results below!

What a great first week back that we have had. Willow have been working hard on our upcoming choir performance and have been singing beautifully this week. We have also been enjoying our new Talk 4 Writing topic on how to survive in an extreme environment. The children have considered what they would need to take with them to a deserted island and what dangers could await them

What an amazing start to the new term! Sequoia class have already done some fantastic work in all their lessons as we explore our new units. In Talk for Reading we investigated some clues that led us to our new model text: The Road Not Taken. In our writing lessons we have had some tips from Bear Grylls to help us create our own survival guides.

Oak class have settled back into school brilliantly this week. They have shown great enthusiasm within their learning in all subjects especially History and our new Talk for Writing unit looking at balanced arguments. Children were pleased to hear that they would be continuing their learning on WW2 this term. In addition to this, Year 6 had a special workshop delivered by Solve It focused on alcohol and drug use.

Acer have settled back into the term amazingly. In history, Acer have analysed sources about the government initiatives during World War 2. They considered how people on the home front would have reacted and how people may feel if the posters were released now. Acer have taken part in a workshop exploring drug and alcohol use and the impact this has.
