City Manager's Report December 15, 2022

“Fired Up for Giving” Toy Drive

In coordination with the Brea Boys and Girls Club, the Brea Fire Department collected toys as part of their annual “Fired Up for Giving” toy drive. The hope is for the toys to bring smiles to the faces of children this holiday season. Donations were accepted until December 15, and toys will be distributed on December 16 and 17. Thanks to our community’s incredible generosity, hundreds of toys will make the holidays brighter for those in need.

Police Department Provides Lifesaving Aid

Kudos to the dispatchers and officers of the Brea Police Department. Last week, their quick response and excellent judgment saved the life of a Brea resident. Brea Police responded to a call about a reported male that was not breathing. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the male was unresponsive and suffering from a drug overdose. Officers were able to administer doses of Narcan to revive the male. The Brea Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene. They took over medical aid and transported the subject to St. Jude Hospital for further medical assistance.

Given the nationwide opioid and fentanyl crisis, the police department recently applied for and was successfully awarded a state-funded grant to obtain Narcan for field deployment. Officers received training on its use just over a week prior to this call for service. This is a great example of the partnership between the police and fire departments, as well as the importance of regularly evaluating equipment and resources to best respond to the community's evolving needs.

Sister City Delegates Visit Brea

This coming January, the City of Brea looks forward to welcoming a student and adult delegation from our Sister City, Anseong, Korea. They arrive on January 9 and will be in Brea for about two weeks. This is the first time the student delegation has been able to visit since the COVID-19 pandemic. Their last visit was in January 2020. Many activities are planned during their stay, including visits to Brea Olinda High School and Brea Junior High School. City staff will tour the delegation through the Brea Museum, one of the fire stations, the Civic & Cultural Center, the Curtis Theater, the Police Department, as well as various parks throughout Brea. Our visitors will be able to ride in the Brea Trolley, which is always one of their most anticipated events. In all, a total of 40 delegates will make the trip to Brea and we look forward to welcoming them.
