Facts about Spiritual Gifts
- Spiritual gifts are freely and graciously given; 1 Corinth 2:12, Rom 12:6
- Spiritual gifts are a means of serving in the Body of Christ, not to exalt the person who has the gift; 1 Peter 4:10
- Spiritual gifts necessitate the activity of the possessor. Our gifts are discovered as we function. 2 Tim 1:6, 1 Corinth 14:12
- Spiritual gifts should not be confused with Fruits of the Spirit, a talent or a calling.
Fruit of the Spirit
- A fruit is the product of a plant. The use of the word help us understand the product of the Holy Spirit, and that the fruit is produced by the Spirit, not by the Christian.
- Fruit of the Spirit is therefore a result of the filling of the Holy Spirit. Gal 5:22 & 23
Talent
- A talent is a natural aptitude or skill often athletic, creative or artistic. It’s an ability that comes without training or something a person is born with. This ability is independent of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- David played the harp, Solomon was poetic, Joseph interpreted dreams, Apollo’s (Acts 18:24) was a debater, Moses was a natural leader, Paul was skilled at communication.
Calling
- A calling is a strong urge toward a particular way of life or career. Calling in biblical terms is the combination of a spiritual gift and passion to a life of servant hood.
- Before one is ready to assume God is calling him / her to use their spiritual gift, the person should evaluate the four components of passion: personality, background, life situations, and the maturity of spiritual walk with Christ.
Spiritual Gifts
- A spiritual gift is a special ability given to us at our Spiritual birth to enable as to effectively function in serving and building up the Body of Christ. (Acts 1:8; 2:4, 17; Joel 2:28, Gal 3:2-5)
- The Holy Spirit comes to live in us when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior (John 3:5; Rom 8:9)
- Each one of us is given a spiritual gift as determined by the Spirit. (1 Corinth 12:11-14)
- The purpose of Spiritual Gifts is to build up the Body of Christ to fulfill its God-given mission (1 Corinth 12:7, 14:12; Eph 4:7-8, 12
- Spiritual gifts often times compliment our talents and the God knows which gifts will be best for our talents and passion (personality, background, life situations)
- Some spiritual gifts are dominant and several others are supporting gifts that are exhibited within a dominant gift.
- There is no exact number on how many spiritual gifts there are but Paul provided 4 different lists in 3 different letters.
- Rom 12:6-8 - Encouragement, Giving, Leadership, Mercy, Prophecy, Service, Teaching
- 1 Corinth 12:8-10 - Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment, Tongues, Interpretation
- 1 Corinth 12:28-30 - Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Miracles, Healings, Helps, Administration, Tongues
