KC News Round Up Friday 7th October

Open Morning

Thank you to all the students who helped make Open Morning a success. They are great ambassadors for the school and we know families really enjoyed meeting them. Thanks also to parents for getting them to school for an early start on a Saturday morning and our KCPA for chatting to families and serving refreshments.

Dance Trip to Sadler's Wells

Dance students headed to Sadler's Wells to see BLKDOG, Botis Seva’s beautifully brutal commentary on how the youth of today are coping in a world not built for them. In an emotionally charged hip hop dance performance, BLKDOG reveals the vicious connection of how self-discovery leads to self-destruction. This production received an Olivier award in 2019 for best 'New Dance' and was a highly thought-provoking trip to the theatre.

"I thought it was innovative and challenging as the performance dealt with real life issues. The sound scape created an uncomfortable mood and the lighting maintained focus with the movement. I recommend this piece to anyone who gets the chance to see it as it pushed the boundaries of what I thought was possible with dance." Mia, Upper Sixth.

Harvest Festival

A huge thank you for supporting our appeal for harvest gifts for the Nourish Foodbank. Every single one is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. If you forgot to hand in your gift, please bring it to the Chaplaincy today or any day next week and we'll make sure it gets to Nourish.

KC Pupils Enjoy West End Success

Addi in Year 9, and Bea from Year 11 have been performing in the Pauline Quirke Academy production of Trouble's a Brewin' at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

" Performing on a West End stage has been an ambition of mine for as long as I can remember, and getting to achieve that last weekend with the Pauline Quirke Academy at the Shaftesbury Theatre (where &Juliet is currently at) was an incredible experience. Addi and I both had significant roles in the show, Trouble’s a Brewin’, and it was breath-taking being able to perform them in front of such a big audience. Witnessing what it was like behind the scenes of a West End show was unreal, and there was so much excitement between scenes - the show was split between three of the PQA academies, so we had two out of six scenes - and the whole cast were so grateful to the runners and stage managers for putting up with the chaos of over 100 kids on a West End stage! Overall, the experience was amazing, and I felt so lucky to be able to perform in such a beautiful theatre with such a supportive and welcoming academy and cast." Bea, Year 11.

Geography Field Trips

This week, KC Geography students have been out on field trips.

"Last Friday Year 8 went on a Geography field trip to the south coast, visiting two beaches in Newhaven and Seaford. It was interesting to see up close the processes of weathering and coastal erosion that we have studied over this half term. Activities included measuring the beach and identifying coastal landforms. Most of us managed to stay dry but an unexpected wave got a few people wet! We finished the trip off with an ice cream on the beach." Phoebe, Year 8.
"On Monday our Year 11 Geography class took a trip to Stratford, London to explore and study the sustainable regeneration of the Olympic village. We have been studying urbanisation this term, specifically focusing on London as our case study. I found this trip to be thoroughly beneficial to bring our classroom learning to life and I believe it will really help us consolidate our knowledge of urbanisation and sustainable regeneration. My classmates and I truly enjoyed the trip, especially drawing on the knowledge of our amazing Geography teachers and I’m sure we would all recommend Geography to any younger students picking their GCSE options." Anya, Year 11.

Maths Challenge

This week a number of Sixth Form A Level students took part in the United Kingdom Mathematical Trust Senior Challenge. This involved answering 25 multiple choice questions in 1½ hours. It is aimed at the top third of pupils in these year groups, so some of the questions were rather challenging! The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate. We now await the results!

Year 6 Taster Day

We welcomed KC Prep Year 6 pupils to the Senior School on Wednesday for a morning of lessons. They enjoyed Textiles, Biology, Spanish, Maths, Geography, English and Latin. We hope they had fun!

National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday, we were visited by award-winning Irish author, Sarah Crossan. Sarah ran a workshop for Years 7-11 AIMS English students, gave a talk for Years 7-10 in the theatre and signed copies of her some of her novels including One, The Weight of Water, Toffee, and Apple & Rain.

Sarah is the current Laureate na nÓg (Ireland’s Children’s Literature Laureate). Her theme as Laureate is #WeAreThePoets, a two-year project inspiring young people to express themselves through poetry and verse. She has won many awards for her books for teenagers and young adults, which have been translated into more than 20 languages.

#BioBakes 2022

Bakes will be judged at school by Miss Handford and Mr Mossman before being photographed and entered into the national competition. Closing date for entries is Thursday 13th October.

Sixth Form Briefing

It has been another busy week in Tilley with the Sixth Formers continuing to lead events in the school as well as working hard on their academic work.

Ms Bruce performs in Tosca

On Friday 30th September, Ms Bruce had her opening night singing in the chorus for Tosca for English National Opera. It was an absolutely amazing night with some astonishing singing, and the audience obviously loved the production, judging by the standing ovation the cast received at the end. The opera is one of the most moving and beautiful operas ever written with stunning melodies and tragic love story. Ms Bruce and Mr Valentine will be organising a trip for Music Scholars to go and see it on November 4th but if you would like to attend, follow the link below – young people can get free tickets for ENO productions and this is a perfect opera for a first time audience member.
