I hope that you all had a restful half term. It is great to see everyone back in school this week as we continue to strive forward with teaching and learning in school, whilst ensuring that well being is still at the centre of all we do. Thank you for continuing to follow social distancing guidelines when picking up and dropping off, as well as adapting quickly to the new end of day routine. Your support and help is, as always, greatly appreciated. Please have a look at the video below to ensure that we all continue to keep safe at pick up at drop off times. Also, if anyone has symptoms over weekends, or any other time, please do ensure you fill out the google form (link is below) so that we can ensure that we can ensure that we continue to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your support.
School life
Year 3 and Year 4 took part in an exciting Zoom session with the Authors Jennifer Bell and Alice Lickens. When 8-year-old Agnes is signed up for SPEARS (the Society for the Protection of Endangered and Awesomely Rare Species), she has no idea of the adventures that lie ahead with her elephant-shrew mentor, Attie (short for "Attenborough"). Operation Honeyhunt sends them to the Atlantic rainforest, on a mission to save an endangered, dance-loving bee named Elton. Will Agnes pass the test and become a full SPEARS agent? It was a great session which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They have lots more facts to now share with you.
Year 1 and Year 1 / 2 had a visit from Guy Fawkes this week!
This week Y2 have enjoyed learning about poetry. They had fun acting out an exciting poem about thunder and loved sequencing the model text to help them learn about the structure of a poem.
This week Reception have been talking about special times we celebrate. The children have been making birthday cards and having birthday parties in the home area. We have also been talking about Bonfire night and the children have been making firework pictures. We have been learning about one more in maths.
Please can we ask that all the children bring their reading folders every day and their reading books and reading records on a Monday, so that we can take out their reading books and quarantine them for 72 hours. We will send home a reading book for the three days, this will not be matched to where the children are in phonics but you can share and talk about it with your child. If the children could bring their folder in every day it helps us to send home any pictures they do or to send home cardigans and jumpers.
Next week we are going on an autumn walk in the school grounds. Please can the children bring their wellies in a named bag on Monday.
Year 4 have been working hard in English this week as well, learning the structure of the text and showing a new found enthusiasm for Unicorns!
MATHS
As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in school, this November Key Stage 2 are taking part in a competition for Maths Week England. It’s called Rock Out 2020 and it’s all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.
For every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, your child will earn their class a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours). Winning classes in the school and in the country as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.
All game modes (Gig, Garage, Studio, etc.) will count but only from games played between 7.30am and 7.30pm on Monday 9th, Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th.
In the spirit of the competition, please don’t play on their behalf but by all means encourage and support them to the extent that it doesn’t cause high stress levels or impact on family plans. We suggest a limit of half an hour a day outside school hours – some will play more, some will play less.
As well as this, all the children in school will have the opportunity to complete additional maths activities. Look out for all the exciting things the children are completing on the Galley Hill Maths Twitter page.
Y6 Puberty Talk
In light of recent government guidance, the Y6 puberty talk which was scheduled for Tuesday 24th November has been rescheduled for Tuesday 15th December.
Children in Need
Next Friday is Children in Need day. On Friday 13th November, children can come into school in non-uniform.
If you can, any donation will be greatly received to send off to Children in Need. I appreciate that it is a difficult time for many people so please donate whatever you can.
Birthday Celebrations
Whilst it may not be possible for the children to have the birthday parties that everyone anticipated recently, we are going to hold a Birthday Celebration on the last Friday of each half term this academic year. This will be an opportunity to have a Birthday party for all who have had their birthday that half term. There will be cake and celebrations! This half term it will be Friday 11th December, during this celebration we will ensure that anyone who has had a birthday since September will be part of the first 'Birthday Crew'.
